2023 Amisfield Central Otago Pinot Gris
Grape
Pinot Gris
Its Origins
Amisfield was established in 1988, a Central Otago based specialist producer of pinot noir and aromatic white wines created from fruit grown on the estate vineyard beneath the Pisa Mountain range in the Cromwell Basin. This privately owned company's 200ha property, once a prominent high country merino station, is one of the largest single vineyard estates in the Central Otago region. Over 80ha is currently planted with the majority of the vines being over ten years old. A state-of-the-art purpose built winery is the focal point of the vineyard and produces 20,000 -30,000 cases of wine annually. Pinot Noir accounts for over 60% of the production with the balance made up of Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Gris and Riesling.
What The Critics Say
Winemaker notes on current 2023 vintage
"A vibrant style of Pinot Gris with an attractive texture. Fresh yet elegant. Aroma is filled with delicate white flowers, nashi pear, white peach and red apple with a touch of cardamom and clove-like sweet spice. The shape starts with the fresh acidity followed by a juicy textural element from the gentle sweetness and barrel aged portion. The hallmark Pisa minerality cuts through nicely on the long finish."
93/100 and rated Excellent by Cameron Douglas MS (2022 vintage)
"Classic Otago Gris bouquet with a mix of white spice and green pear skin, the apples and a lees lager quality. As the wine opens up on the palate the texture from acidity, lees and ripe fruits fold in together adding complexity and mouthfeel. Dry, taut, youthful and delicious. A wine for any occasion with or wothout food. Don’t chill too much please. Best drinking from 2023 through 2027+."
