2023 Astrolabe Taihoa Sauvignon Blanc
Grape
Sauvignon Blanc
Its Origins
Astrolabe was created in 1996 by winemaker Simon Waghorn, the culmination of a career that began in South Australia in 1982. Winemaking later led Simon and his family from Te Kauwhata to Gisborne, where he specialised in Chardonnay, and eventually to Marlborough where in 1996 he and his wife Jane Forrest-Waghorn joined with old friends Paul Davenport and Sally Lewis to have a go at their own label…and so began Astrolabe. Today they work with a number of growers scattered all over Marlborough, from Awatere valley to the Kekerengu coast to the Wairau Valley, developing a wide portfolio of iconic wines that celebrate the varieties and terroirs of Marlborough.
What The Critics Say
95/100 Bob Campbell MW
"Deliciously nutty sauvignon that retains strong varietal character despite oak and yeast lees influence. It has a terrific texture with power and purity while displaying good palate weight and a lingering finish. Serious sauvignon that promises to age gracefully, at least in the medium term 31 May 2024." Drink 2024 - 2030
96/100 Decanter, Cameron Douglas MS (2021 vintage)
"A bouquet of complexity and charm, delicate savoury spice and lees complexities, citrus and white fleshed . tree fruits, some barrel ferment quaities with a light white nut and spice enticement. Fantastic on the palate with a silk touch then flavours of freh citrus and cape gooseberry flash, grapefruit and seaside spices. The acidity and barrel ferment textures layer in complexity and mouthfeel. Delicious and lengthy a fantastic wine."
