2023 Boneline Pink Noise Rose
Grape
Cabernet Franc, Pinot Noir, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot
Its Origins
Boneline are a Waipara operation with a serious focus on terroir. Waipara’s lime-rich soils and nearly identical climate to Chablis allow Boneline to explore stylistic bridge points between the more restrained French and more brightly fruited characteristics of New Zealand terroir wines. The name Boneline itself invokes a network of ideas linking their wines and terroir to the primordial history of the site, directly referring to fossilised fish bones that have been found around the Waipara River - which also appear on their labels - and indirectly referring to the lime in the soil, itself a residue of fish calcium that forms the various bone-like substrata of many Waipara vineyards and makes the region such a special place for wine. Bringing to their work a broad range of human and marketing as well as winemaking talents, Boneline look set to define new possibilities for their exceptional place and its offerings.
What The Critics Say
93/100 Cameron Douglas MS (2022 Vintage)
"A striking appearance of dark salmon oil and hints of red lead to a powerful bouquet of apricot, red apple skin and roses with a saffron note. Dry, fruity, smooth and delicious, a wine with plenty of mouthfeel and contrasting textures, core fruit flavours that reflect the bouquet and a lengthy dry-ish raspberry flesh finish. Delicious on its own or with light weight proteins through summer 2023."
Winemaker notes
This years Pink Noise Rose’ is made up of four varieties- Pinot Noir, Cabernet Franc, Merlot and Syrah. Our organically grown grapes are hand harvested then whole bunch pressed gently over 5 hours. The juice is settled overnight before racking off gross solids taking only fluffy lees. 10% of the Pinot Noir stays on gross lees and is held at 2 degrees for stabulation over 7 days, this involves stirring the lees in the juice every 12 hours for 7 days, increasing the aromatics and the texture in the resulting wines . Fermentation is allowed to proceed slowly at low temperature and stopped when the sugar, acid, alcohol and phenolics are in balance. All batches are fermented in stainless steel except for the 10% mentioned, which is fermented and aged in old French oak barrels. The wine is racked and spends 6 months on fine lees before bottling.
