Its Origins

Boneline are a Waipara operation with a serious focus on terroir. Waipara’s lime-rich soils and nearly identical climate to Chablis allow Boneline to explore stylistic bridge points between the more restrained French and more brightly fruited characteristics of New Zealand terroir wines. The name Boneline itself invokes a network of ideas linking their wines and terroir to the primordial history of the site, directly referring to fossilised fish bones that have been found around the Waipara River - which also appear on their labels - and indirectly referring to the lime in the soil, itself a residue of fish calcium that forms the various bone-like substrata of many Waipara vineyards and makes the region such a special place for wine. Bringing to their work a broad range of human and marketing as well as winemaking talents, Boneline look set to define new possibilities for their exceptional place and it’s offerings.

What The Critics Say

Winemaker notes on current 2023 vintage

"Gold green with flecks of sliverAlluring aromas of bright fresh citrus, gooseberries and tropial mango interlaced with fresh herbs and lime zest. On the pallet - concentrated, rich and round, intense citrus through the mid palate with mineral focused. The structure is built around a bright acid line complimented with fine tannins from the skin contact and a creamy texture from time on lees. It finishes with a mixture of tropical fruits and lime bitters that cleanse the palate. Distinctive and Delicious. Serve slightly chilled."

94/100 Cameron Douglas MS (2021 vintage)

"Distinctive with a mineral and citrus led bouquet. Aromas of fresh mayer lemon and apple, some white peach and grapefruit, stony soils and fresh sage. A fine saline texture and fresh cittrus fruit flavours touch the palate first, then flavours of green herb and gooseberry, apple and citrus pith. A delicious wine with an equally enticing mouthfeel as it is fruity and varietal. Pure and fresh, dry and real."
