Its Origins
Boneline are a Waipara operation with a serious focus on terroir. Waipara’s lime-rich soils and nearly identical climate to Chablis allow Boneline to explore stylistic bridge points between the more restrained French and more brightly fruited characteristics of New Zealand terroir wines. The name Boneline itself invokes a network of ideas linking their wines and terroir to the primordial history of the site, directly referring to fossilised fish bones that have been found around the Waipara River - which also appear on their labels - and indirectly referring to the lime in the soil, itself a residue of fish calcium that forms the various bone-like substrata of many Waipara vineyards and makes the region such a special place for wine. Bringing to their work a broad range of human and marketing as well as winemaking talents, Boneline look set to define new possibilities for their exceptional place and it’s offerings.

"A full richly scented bouquet with barrel spices and roasted stone fruit then baking spices, cashew nut and vanilla. Classic, new and complex. A delicious wine on the palate with flavours of roasted nectarine and peach, grapefruit and baking spices. Full-bodied with vanilla and nut, wood smoke and stony mineral qualities. Well made with fine tannins and medium+ acid line. Best drinking from day of purchase through 2030."

"Complex, layered fruit with subtle savoury tones and noticeable pithiness initially. The grapefruit and citrus flavours expand across the palate, picking up some nutty tahini and creamy vanilla notes before firming up with phenolics and oak on the back. Restrained, a bit edgy and tight, this slowly opened up with air to reveal more perfumed floral and herbal notes here which will develop in the mid-term. Identifiably sappy Mendoza clone flavours hold on the finish, addling to the fruit length. One for the cellar 24 Dec 2024." Drink 2026 – 2035
