2023 Felton Road Block 6 Chardonnay

96 Points John Caro
In stock
A top-notch Chardonnay from a special place in the Felton Road holdings. Block 6 is an elevated site of free-draining lochar gravels, where low fertility and a steeper north-facing aspect ensure perfect conditions to produce ripe but elegant Chardonnay wines. An exceptional wine that is rarely in retail — the Block 6 Chardonnay will sell out in a jiffy!

Its Origins

Felton Road is situated on warm, north facing slopes of glacial loess soils in Bannockburn, in the heart of Central Otago. It dates back to 1991 when Stewart Elms planted the Elms Vineyard on Felton Road. Blair Walter has been winemaker here since 1996, right from the start. The total vineyard area is now at 32 hectares. The modern gravity fed winery receives 100% estate grown fruit from its three vineyards that are all farmed biodynamically and are fully certified by Demeter. Minimal intervention in the winemaking with such practices as wild yeast, no fining or filtration, allow the unique vineyard characters to further express their considerable personality. Since the first vintage in 1997, Felton Road has acquired a formidable worldwide reputation.

What The Critics Say

Winemaker notes on current 2023 vintage

"The higher elevation and north facing slope of Block 6 has again ripened with stone fruit aromas that are exuberant and defining. Peach and nectarine flavours dominate the broad and expansive palate, but are sufficiently contained by a finish of purity and dancing acidity. The depth and length are impressive. Uncomplicated by unnecessary intervention, it’s an accurate and compelling expression of Block 6, Elms Vineyard."

97/100 Bob Campbell MW (2022 vintage)

"Rich, ripe and quite concentrated chardonnay with mineral/oyster shell influence together with subtle oak and nutty yeast lees characters. The oak influence certainly adds complexity and texture but shifts the focus away from purity."

96/100 James Suckling (2022 vintage)

"Mandarin orange, yellow cherries and green banana followed by butterscotch and dried tea leaves with an underlying saline minerality. Medium-bodied, bright acidity. Persistent depth and balance. Elegant finish. A firmness and focus in texture. About 60% old vines on their own rootstock. Mendoza (Wente). From biodynamically grown grapes with Demeter certification. Drink or hold. Screw cap."
