2023 Frontonio Botijo Rojo Garnacha

Grape
Garnacha (Grenache)
Its Origins
"Bodegas Frontonio is the personal project of young gun Fernando Mora MW, hailing from the Valdejalón appellation (technically an IGP, not a DO) of Aragón. These scintillating wines are some of the very best being made today east of Rioja and west of Conca, and they’re already garnering effusive praise from both Luis Gutiérrez and Jancis Robinson. Best of all, prices are very fair for the high quality—and the quality begins in the vineyard: Mora and his team own fifty hectares of beautiful old bushvines in rocky clay-limestone selected for high altitude and north-facing exposition to emphasize freshness. And although this is Garnacha country (Aragón, in fact, is thought to be the birthplace of Garnacha), the whites are every bit as fascinating and delicious as the red." Skurnik Wines
What The Critics Say
92/100 RobertParker.com, Luis Gutierrez
"Frontonio has 25-plus hectares of certified organic vineyards, and from 2022 onward, all the wines are certified organic; and they are working toward their biodynamic certification (hopefully for 2024). The Botijo and Microcósmico range come from certified organic grapes from the family of Mario López, one of the members of Frontonio. They have been fine-tuning their harvest dates and making a stricter selection of their grapes to gain precision, and the wines are a little more austere. The juicy, primary and fruit-driven 2023 Botijo Rojo Garnacha has a pale, bright ruby color and a nose of wild berries and herbs, with a floral touch. It's velvety and tasty, with a slaty twist and a finish with hints of licorice and fine tannins. It has 13.5% alcohol with a pH of 3.19 and is direct, varietal and fresh. 59,324 bottles produced. It was bottled in September 2024. Drink 2024-2028"
91+/100 RobertParker.com, Luis Gutierrez (2022 vintage)
"The unoaked red 2022 Botijo Rojo Garnacha wants to be a fresh and crunchy expression of the grape. It was produced with the fruit from 25 hectares of 20- to 50-year-old vines on clay and limestone stony soils at 450 meters in altitude in the village of Épila. It fermented in stainless steel and concrete vats with 8% to 10% full clusters and matured in underground concrete vats for nine months. It's a naked and fruit-driven Garnacha that is perfumed and delicate, with fresh tannins, fine-grained and with some chalky grip."
