2023 Greywacke Marlborough Riesling

94 Points Richard Caro
In stock
A deliciously succulent and rich Riesling from experts in Marlborough varietals. Grown organically near the mouth of Brancott Valley, this vibrant and not strictly dry Riesling was grown on the kind of gravel and clay soils that are usually associated with Marlborough's high-end Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. A wine of serious enjoyment and potential, the Greywacke Riesling is delicious.

Its Origins

Greywacke is the Marlborough label of Kevin Judd, and the fulfilment of a long held dream. The name Greywacke was adopted by Kevin and his wife Kimberley for their first Marlborough vineyard located in Rapaura, named in recognition of the high prevalence of rounded greywacke river stones in the soils of the vineyard. Kevin registered the name back in 1993 with the vague notion that he might one day want to use it on a wine label of his own. This quality focused winemaking venture sources fruit from mature vineyards within the central Wairau Plains and the Southern Valleys. The wines are made by Kevin at Dog Point Winery in the lower Brancott Valley, a facility extended to him by long-standing friends and industry colleagues, Ivan Sutherland and James Healy.

What The Critics Say

95/100 Bob Campbell MW (2022 vintage)

"Vibrant, off-dry riesling with intense lime and oyster shell flavours. Sweet/sour interaction gives the wine an exquisite tension. I have little doubt that the wine will age well, although it is delicious now. 24 Jan 2024." Drink 2024 - 2029

5 Stars Michael Cooper (2022 vintage)

"Bright, light yellow/green, it is a full-bodied style of riesling, with concentrated, ripe, peachy flavours, showing excellent depth, delicacy and vigour, considerable complexity, gentle sweetness, balanced acidity, and a very harmonious, persistent finish. Already delicious."

94/100 The Real Review, Stephen Wong MW (2022 vintage)

"Bright gold. Instantly complex and beguiling perfume with hints of toasty development. Spice, dried roses, hints of honey and mushroom all combine into a pot-pourried amalgam of aromas. Medium-dry on the palate, light and elegant but with lovely complexity and a feathery texture surounds this flowing wine as it slides into a nicely tapered mid-weight apple and grapefruit flavours with just enough phenolic grip to give it definition on the mid-length finish. Already quite complex, this is approachable now and shows early tertiary development 19 Jan 2024." Drink 2024 - 2030
