2023 Kirwan Margaux En Primeur
En Primeur product: order now for arrival mid 2026. An underprcied estate in Margaux with a storied history. Thomas Jefferson wrote about his visit this estate already named Kirwan while serving as Ambassador to France. The current owners from the Schröder and Schÿler families became involved with the estate in the late 19th Century and have owned it ever since 1926. A family operation with massive potential for the price, the Kirwan is one to try! Unlike other retailers (who charge a second payment on arrival), our En Primeur prices are the total and final landed cost, including GST. With the changing economic situation and foreign exchange risk, we do this to ensure you have complete certainty over what you will pay.

Its Origins
"Le Château Kirwan is a beautiful property in the heart of the Margaux vineyard. It was built at the end of the 18th century by Mark Kirwan, an Irish businessman, who received Domaine when he married the daughter of then-owner John Collingwood, a merchant in Bordeaux. Thomas Jefferson, US ambassador to France, praised it in his travel notes in 1787. Le Château became a Third Grand Cru Classé in 1855, at the time of the famous classification published for the Paris Universal Exhibition. It was acquired by the Bordeaux trading house Schröder & Schÿler in 1926, the Schÿlers being of Hanseatic origin. Today, Sophie, Nathalie and Yann Schÿler are at the helm of the estate, working with the best viticultural and oenological consultants to optimize the excellence of their wines. The vineyard covers 37 hectares on Pyrenean gravel and sandy-gravel soils, and is planted with 47% Cabernet Sauvignon, 35% Merlot, 10% Cabernet Franc and 8% Petit Verdot. The wines are aged for 18 to 21 months in oak barrels, 33% of which are new. The estate produces a Second wine, Charmes de Kirwan. The wines of Château Kirwan are known for their finesse and freshness, where purity of fruit rubs shoulders with precision and balance." Premiumgrandscrus.com
What The Critics Say
93-95/100 Jeb Dunnuck
"Another brilliant wine from Margaux, the 2023 Château Kirwan reveals a deep blue/purple hue to go with a nicely oaked profile of ripe black fruits, leafy herbs, iron, violets, and spice. It's balanced, medium to full-bodied, has a supple, layered mouthfeel, remarkable purity, and a great finish. As with most 2023s, it's going to shine with just a few years of bottle age."
93-94/100 James Suckling
"This shows notes of ripe dark berries with hints of licorice and orange peel. It’s very polished and refined with a solid center-palate. Medium-bodied and creamy on the finish."
92-94/100 Vinous, Antonio Galloni
"The 2023 Kirwan is dense, resonant and impeccably balanced. Succulent dark cherry, plum, licorice, menthol, spice and lavender are all dialed up in this decidedly intense Margaux. Kirwan packs quite the punch, but it is also neatly proportioned, not to mention incredibly delicious." Drink 2031 - 2053
