2023 Mt Difficulty Bannockburn Dry Riesling
Grape
Riesling
Its Origins
It all began in the early 1990's, when the owners of five newly-planted vineyards in Bannockburn shook hands and decided to work together to produce wine under one label, Mt Difficulty. As a result, Mt Difficulty now owns some of the oldest vineyards in the Bannockburn sub-region of Central Otago in New Zealand's rugged South Island. The Mt Difficulty brand started in 1998 with a very small production of Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, made by Grant Taylor of Gibbston Valley Wines (now of Valli Wines). Prior to this the gang sold their grapes to either Gibbston Valley or Chard Farm. The Air New Zealand wine awards in 1999 put Mt Difficulty on the map, with the 1998 Pinot Noir winning a gold medal and the Chardonnay, silver.
What The Critics Say
95/100 The Real Review, Stephen Wong MW
"Pale white-gold colour. Vivid nose with strong aromas of juicy calamansi, musk, sweet herb and funky wild-ferment complexity. The palate enters with a sliver of stone-fruit, possessing ample weight on the dry, broad and generous palate with delicious concentration of fruit, spice and some nicely chewy phenolics to cinch in the fleshy, juicy flavours. Linear, long and innately complex though unevolved at present, this will give years of enjoyment 19 JAN 2024." Drink 2025 - 2036
93/100 RobertParker.com, Erin Larkin
"The 2023 Bannockburn Dry Riesling leads with pear drop and lime flesh, lemon barley and tatami mat. This is from a low-yielding, terraced site called the Target Gully Vineyard. While the vineyard is facing west, the shadow of Mount Difficulty means that the site loses the afternoon light quite early. The wine in the mouth is piercing and laser focused. Tight and lovely, there’s a splay of lanolin through the very finish. 12.5% alcohol, sealed under screw cap. This wine was handpicked and whole-bunch pressed. 2023 was a warmer, sunnier season until harvest. Wild ferment was in stainless steel. This has eight grams per liter of residual sugar with eight grams of total acidity to balance." Drink 2023 - 2035
