With beautiful depth and quality, the Elston never shouts but instead just embodies elegance and pedigree. It is medium-bodied with subtly powerful stone fruit, creamy/mealy notes and fine oak characters. Both a classy and a classic drop, the Elston is a safe bet.

Its Origins

Originally a farm with homestead established in 1854 by John Chambers, it was his son Bernard who, on return from travels in France, planted vineyards on its north facing hills - which are still in use. In 1919 the Chambers sold and the Te Mata Vineyards company was established, to continue until 1975 when two associates, John Buck and Michael Morris, ended their 8 year search for a winery location by purchasing on the historic Te Mata estate. By remaining firmly rooted in a kind of modern traditional approach - quality focussed wines made with long-term expertise and from estate-only vineyards - Te Mata Estate have risen and risen as New Zealand’s benchmark for cellaring quality. Depending on variety, both their middle and top end wines are consistently capable not only of balance and appeal on release, but of aging for multiple decades.

What The Critics Say

96/100 Wine Orbit, Sam Kim

"Complex and enticing.. the palate displays terrific poise and tension.. splendidly structured and balanced with a sustained, graceful finish."

94/100 RobertParker.com, Erin Larkin

"The nose leads with a profusion of white pineapple and green apple, roasted hazelnut/cashew and white flowers. There is an abundance of toasty oak, but it's not the main player onstage, which is great. It supports the fruit, and in the mouth, the purity and power of the fruit really emerges. There is really structural grip and shape to the wine, and the acidity is juicy and feels woven into every aspect. It is impressive, flavorsome and almost achingly intense, with great length through the finish. Recommended. 13% alcohol, sealed under screw cap. Handpicked and whole-bunch pressed, the 2023 vintage was about only 40% of its usual volume. It was barrel fermented with indigenous malolactic fermentation, in this case about 85%, with the focus being purity of acidity and fresh fruit aromatically. Matured for 11 months in French oak, the wine had some bâtonnage prior to sulfuring, which is right after malolactic fermentation. The 2023 Elston Chardonnay has been made since 1984, this being its 29th vintage." Drink 2024 - 2033

94/100 Gary Walsh, Winefront

"Light-mid yellow colour; subtle nutty/nougat and wheat-meal complexities, the palate tremendously intense, bright, tensioned and focused, with terrific balance and persistence. The subtle complexities really creep up on you. Great concentration and crystalline Bright fruit, citrus and white nectarine, almond, fine spiced oak, a bit of bread dough... a bit of flint, a burst of flavour, some saline characters, a slight fresh pineapple thing, with a lively gently savoury/toasted hazelnut finish of excellent length. It certainly has some get-up-and-go ."
