Biodynamic

2024 Felton Road Dry Riesling

93 Points John Caro
In stock
A deliciously dry, steely Riesling from legends Felton Rd. From low-yielding vines in Biodynamic Bannockburn soils, this impressive wine is what Central whites are all about: crisp citrus and florals with tons of minerally freshness. Lip-smacking now, it will probably age better than most whites three times the price. Pure pedigree and rare in retail — grab this while stocks last!

Its Origins

Felton Road is situated on warm, north facing slopes of glacial loess soils in Bannockburn, in the heart of Central Otago. It dates back to 1991 when Stewart Elms planted the Elms Vineyard on Felton Road. Blair Walter has been winemaker here since 1996, right from the start. The total vineyard area is now at 32 hectares. The modern gravity fed winery receives 100% estate grown fruit from its three vineyards that are all farmed biodynamically and are fully certified by Demeter. Minimal intervention in the winemaking with such practices as wild yeast, no fining or filtration, allow the unique vineyard characters to further express their considerable personality. Since the first vintage in 1997, Felton Road has acquired a formidable worldwide reputation.

What The Critics Say

Winemaker notes on current 2024 vintage

"A vibrant bouquet of spring flowers, talc and orchard fruits introduces this impressive and commanding wine. Ripe apple and pear abound on the palate, complimented by pink grapefruit and mineral notes. For a dry wine, it’s surprisingly luscious: such is the power of the fruit supporting this crisp and vineyard expressive Riesling. Mature vines, careful farming and respectfully guided to the bottle."

96/100 Bob Campbell MW (2021 vintage)

"Mouth-watering, bone-dry riesling with saline, oyster-shell, lemon blossom and wild flowers. Intense, linear and lengthy. Textural wine with impressive weight and a lingering finish. A wine of two lives: full of youthful vigour now but with added toasty complexity when it hits maturity in a decade or so."

5 Stars Michael Cooper (2019 vintage)

"Based on low-yielding vines in schisty soils at Bannockburn, in Central Otago, this wine is hand-picked in The Elms Vineyard and fermented with indigenous yeasts. The 2019 vintage (5*) is well worth cellaring. Bright, light lemon/green, it is attractively scented, medium-bodied and youthful, with intense, lemony, slightly appley and spicy flavours, dry (4 grams/litre of residual sugar), finely balanced and long. Not at all austere in its infancy."
