2021 Sandalford Margaret River Cabernet Merlot
Grape
Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot
Its Origins
The establishment of Sandalford Wines in 1840 coincided with both the first European settlement at the Colony of Perth and birth of Western Australia's world famous wine industry. In 1970, the Company was one of three initial pioneers of the Margaret River wine region (275km south of Perth and today considered by many as one of the world's truly great premium wine growing appellations) when the first vines were planted at its 300 hectare vineyard located there.
What The Critics Say
Winemaker notes on current vintage
"A deep and brooding nose of blackberry and redcurrant fruits, plum, wild mint, mulberry and chocolate box characteristics. The wine evolves and opens up in the glass revealing a real juiciness, along with oak spice, camphor and nutmeg to complement the ripe fruit notes. Generous, up front sweet fruit flavours of dark berries and plums that are balanced with savoury spice notes of bay leaf, fresh nutmeg and mocha. Medium weight with tight, fine grained tannin, supported by balanced acidity. This provides a lovely balance and a sustained finish to the wine. A wine that drinks well now, but will benefit from medium term cellaring."
94/100 James Halliday (2016 vintage)
"Estate-grown, matured in new French oak. Cassis, plum and leaf on the bouquet are replicated on the opening stanzas of the palate. It's not until the finish that the tannins appear and lock onto the taste buds, allied with bay leaf and black olive. Demands patience."
