2020 Hiedler Riesling 1OTW Gaisberg
Grape
Riesling
Its Origins
From 35 hectares of Erste Lage (Premier Cru) holdings in the Kamptal, the Hiedler family has been producing wine in Langelois since the mid-18th century. Starting in 1980, Ludwig and María Angeles Hiedler have led operations, while their son Ludwig Jr. finishes his winemaking studies and practicum at Von Volxem. Hiedler’s holdings are in the best vineyards in the Kamptal, with Riesling parcels in the Heiligenstein and Gaisberg, and Grüner Veltliner in the deep loess vineyards that rest at the base of those mountains: Lamm, Grub, and Renner. Hiedler’s other sites in the area include a ‘Grand Cru’ monopole, Thal, Spiegel, Steinhaus, and Loiserberg. In addition to Grüner Veltliner and Riesling, the Hiedlers work with Weissburgunder (Pinot Blanc), the first plantings of which were planted by Ludwig’s father in the Schenkenbickl, a ‘Grand Cru’ plot just below the Käferberg. All organic/natural practices. Notably, malolactic fermentation is never blocked but allowed to occur naturally, allowing Hiedler a quite broad and unique dimension of texture and weight; a distinctive approach to both Grüner Veltliner and Riesling from this region.
What The Critics Say
94/100 Parker's Wine Advocate, Stephan Reinhardt
"Hiedler's 2020 Kammern Ried Gaisberg 1ÖTW Riesling is clear, intense and fresh on the nose that intertwines crystalline terroir aromas with very fine yet dense and spicy Riesling aromas. Lush and elegant on the crystalline and highly elegant palate, this is a quiet, balanced and charming Riesling from the Gaisberg's Kammern side. The wine is tight, intense and complex and structured by very fine tannins and phenols as well as crystalline, mineral acidity. Impressive. Tasted in Grafenegg, September 2021." Drink 2025 - 2050
Winemakers Note
"With its milder microclimate, the exposed Gaisberg is one of the historically most important Riesling vineyards in the Kamptal. A vast variety of metamorphic and crystalline rocks form its soils. On two terraces, our vines dig their roots into Paragneiss. Occasionally there are islands of granite and marble, with shallow covers of loess at the foot of the hill. The concentrated Rieslings of this slope are characterized by their expressive fruit and warm minerality. The nose shows lots of complexity and minerality, ripe citrus fruits, lemon, rosemary, also some peach; fleshy and compact on the palate, rich, beautiful fruit, also some flinty notes in the background, long and nuanced finish, elegant; fantastic aging potential!"
