2022 Durvillea Marlborough Pinot Gris
Grape
Pinot Gris
Its Origins
Astrolabe winemaker Simon Waghorn has this to say about Durvillea: “All along Marlborough’s coast, clinging to rocks at low tide is the seaweed Durvillea. We know it as bull kelp or rimurapa. As a young man at university I studied seaweed. Named for the captain of the Astrolabe, Durvillea seaweed is my quintessential emblem of our wild coast. The Durvillea grapes are grown in the Waihopai, Wairau and Awatere Valleys of Marlborough. The grapes are harvested at precisely the right moment and I preserve the purity and intensity of flavour in my winemaking. Durvillea is Astrolabe’s little sister label. This provides us with the opportunity to offer another range of classic Marlborough wines from our Astrolabe vineyards.”
What The Critics Say
91/100 Bob Campbell MW (2021 vintage)
“Pleasantly textural pinot gris with fresh pear, apple and honeysuckle flavours. Crisp, dry wine with lively acidity that perfectly balances a hint of sweetness. Fine, peppery phenolics compound the drying effect. 05 SEP 2022." Drink 2022 - 2026
Blue-Gold Medal, Sydney International Wine Competition (2016 vintage)
"Light straw green colour. Interesting delicate nose with tropical aromas complexed with some herbal hints. Attractive primary fruit on the palate which retains finesse and length. This slightly more delicate style was an excellent pairing with food." Dr. Ken Dobbler, Judge
