Lustau East India Solera Sherry 500ml

A blend of Oloroso and Pedro Ximenez Sherries, this mix of complex and sweet is the good version of Grandma's Cream Sherry. 'East India' signifies the extra time in wood to replicate the ultimate barrel aging of olden days -- i.e. being sent by ship to the East Indies. Dark in colour, its freshness and not-too-syrupy sweetness hold rich layers of dried fruit, coffee, toffee and chocolate. Delicious by itself or with dark, rich desserts.

Its Origins

Bodegas Lustau was founded in 1896 by Mr. José Ruiz-Berdejo. It was a modest beginning: José, a court clerk, cultivated the vines on his land, known as Nuestra Señora de la Esperanza. In the house at the vineyard, he produced the wines he later sold to the major exporting wineries. Each individual component of this blend (Oloroso and Pedro Ximénez) is aged in its own Solera. After blending, the wine is further aged for three years in a solera of 33 American oak casks before bottling. A dark mahogany colour with bronze hues. Concentrated aromas of ripe fruits, mocca, cocoa and toffee. Very complex on the palate, with a clean acidity and flavour of raisins, nuts, crystallized orange and candied peel. Ideal with rich cakes, egg based puddings and blue cheeses (Stilton, Gorgonzola). Also as an ideal digestif for the sweet-toothed.

What The Critics Say

94/100 Robert Parker

"Readers looking for something weighty, sweet, and provocative should check out the non-vintage East India Solera. A blend of soleras averaging 15 to 50 years of age, it boasts a dark amber color as well as a huge nose of melted toffee, caramel, figs, and prunes. This over-the-top yet surprisingly vibrant (because of good acidity) effort is best drunk as dessert at the end of a meal."
