Pinot Gris

Its Origins

A major factor in Riverby’s success is the total control over all grape production on the single estate vineyard. A significant portion of the vineyard consists of vines with considerable age and this is complemented by slightly younger vines utilising modern clones. This combination of vine age and meticulous clonal selection is readily apparent in the high quality fruit being produced. Vines were first planted in 1989; on land that had previously been used for cropping and sheep farming. Further plantings have continued over the years, until now over 70 hectares are planted out in Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Riesling, Pinot Gris, Semillon, and Syrah. The most recent planting is of Gruner Veltliner. As part of Riverby’s focus on viticultural excellence, yields are kept very low and several varieties are hand picked. Sustainable grape-growing techniques are practiced throughout the whole grape-growing and winemaking cycle.

What The Critics Say

93/100 Wine Pages, Tom Cannavan

"This is another of Riverby's wines that just seems to get better each vintage, and this one is an absolute gem. From vines planted in 2006, and with just a touch of residual sugar to add weight rather than sweetness, it has a succulent stone fruit nose, a delicate biscuit or pastry warmth and yet real freshness too, floral and citrus adding vivid highlights. The palate is absolutely delicious I must say. Fleshy nectarine sweetness has loads of depth, star anise hints, even a touch of ginger or clove, and the thrusting core of lime acidity is so precise without being too sharp. Beguiling stuff."

"This is wonderfully fruited and enticing on the nose, showing poached pear, fig, lemon peel and subtle spice aromas, leading to a silky-smooth palate that's succulent and fleshy. It's beautifully framed by refreshing acidity, offering excellent drinking. At its best: now to 2027."
