2020 Soumade Rasteau Prestige
Grape
Usually about 70% Grenache, 20% Syrah and 10% Mourvedre
Its Origins
Domaine La Soumade was founded by André Roméro in 1979. By 1990, this passionate winegrower had achieved his long-cherished ambition of selling his entire production in bottle. And in 1996, André was joined by his son Frédéric, after he had obtained his BEPA Diploma in viticulture and oenology. A new modern winery was built in 2002, the same year that a partnership with consultant Stéphane Derenoncourt and his team began. Stéphane encouraged gentler and more finely-tuned vinification techniques, so as to better reflect the unique expression and potential of the terroir. Without doubt, the wines have achieved greater finesse and purity. As of today, the estate covers 26 hectares in the commune of Rasteau and an additional hectare in Gigondas - a small terraced vineyard near the Dentelles de Montmirail. The clay - limestone soils of Rasteau produce naturally powerful wines with great ageing potential.
What The Critics Say
94/100 Decanter, Matt Walls
"Good density, freshness and intensity here, with genuine Rasteau creamy-clay tannins. Powerful but not excessive, the alcohol is better balanced than expected. Relatively dark-fruited in style, with damson and black cherry and real presence on the palate. A fresh, powerful, balanced Rasteau that will last for over a decade in bottle. Fermented in stainless steel, aged for 18 months in concrete tanks (75%) and foudres (25%)." Drink 2023 - 2035
93/100 Wine Enthusiast, Anna Lee C. Iijima (2019 Vintage)
"Sun-kissed but zesty blackberry and boysenberry flavors are etched by veins of salt, crushed granite and peppercorn in this full-bodied blend of 70% Grenache, 20% Syrah and 10% Mourvèdre. Matured in equal parts stainless steel and large-format barrels, it's pristine in black-fruit flavors and briskly balanced in acidity. Edged by very fine, peppery tannins, it's vibrantly youthful now but should improve through 2029.
Robert Parker
“The superstar of Rasteau is Andre Romero, who produces five cuvees of drop-dead delicious red wine.”
