2021 Soumade Cotes du Rhone

91 Points John Caro

Amazing Cotes du Rhone that puts many expensive village wines to shame. Brimming with vibrant dark and red fruits, it's tempting to mis-use the term 'fruit-driven' if it wasn't equally floral, savoury and spicy. Everything to everyone, this is one of the most satisfying Cotes du Rhone reds anywhere for the price. Exceptional!

Its Origins

Domaine La Soumade was founded by André Roméro in 1979. By 1990, this passionate winegrower had achieved his long-cherished ambition of selling his entire production in bottle. And in 1996, André was joined by his son Frédéric, after he had obtained his BEPA Diploma in viticulture and oenology. A new modern winery was built in 2002, the same year that a partnership with consultant Stéphane Derenoncourt and his team began. Stéphane encouraged gentler and more finely-tuned vinification techniques, so as to better reflect the unique expression and potential of the terroir. Without doubt, the wines have achieved greater finesse and purity. As of today, the estate covers 26 hectares in the commune of Rasteau and an additional hectare in Gigondas - a small terraced vineyard near the Dentelles de Montmirail. The clay - limestone soils of Rasteau produce naturally powerful wines with great ageing potential.

What The Critics Say

90/100 Parker's Wine Advocate, Joe Czerwinski (2017 vintage)

"The 2017 Cotes du Rhone derives from young vines in Rasteau (four to ten years of age). It's impressively rich and concentrated for a young-vines cuvée, with bold flavors of black cherries, chocolate and spice cake. Drink it over the next couple of years."

Robert Parker

“The superstar of Rasteau is Andre Romero, who produces five cuvees of drop-dead delicious red wine.”

Simon Field MW (2010 vintage)

"A classic Côtes-du-Rhône, many say the classic Côtes-du-Rhône, its only sin being the fact that it is far too good for such a lowly appellation. The wine is tank aged, its component being 90% Grenache and 10% Syrah. A beautiful nose of hedgerow fruit and violets and a very concentrated palate with blackberry, damson and plum and a pleasingly peppery kick on the finish."
