2023 Three Dark Horses Bandy McLaren Vale Cabernet Sauvignon

In stock
A super-low price on this former Trophy-winning Cabernet from McLaren Vale. A basket-pressed red from a single vineyard wine from up to 50 y/o vines, this has a serious track record with a recent vintage (2016) winning a trophy at the New Zealand International Wine Show. From a winery rated 5 Stars, James Halliday tasted this previous vintage and it was so good the "the price had to be wrong", till he checked and "it wasn't". A rich but sophisticated 'Shiraz-drinker's' Cabernet, at this discount the Bandy is a stunning red to drink now or cellar.

Its Origins

"Three Dark Horses is the new project for former Coriole winemaker Matt Broomhead. After vintages in southern Italy (2007) and the Rhone Valley he returned to McLaren Vale in late 2009 and, with his father Alan, buys quality grapes, thanks to the long experience they both have in the region. The third dark horse is Matt's grandfather, a vintage regular. But things are changing. In Nov '17 the business acquired a 5ha vineyard in McLaren Vale, and will build an onsite winery. They are expanding the plantings with grenache blanc, clairette and touriga nacional, and reworking some of the shiraz vines planted in 1964. Part of the vineyard is sand soil-based interspersed with ironstone, a highly desirable mix for shiraz and cabernet sauvignon." -- James Halliday

What The Critics Say

93/100 Sam Kim, Wine Orbit

"This is immediately appealing on the nose, showing blackcurrant, sweet cherry, rich floral, subtle tobacco and cedar aromas. The palate is equally enticing with succulent fruit intensity combined with fine texture and chalky tannins, making it sturdy and supple at the same time with a sustained, delectable finish."
