2022 Bruno Rocca Barbera d'Alba

92 Points John Caro

A super classy Barbera from the town of Alba in Piedmont. Bruno Rocca's compelling expression of this relatively full-fruited grape is deep and dark in aspect, but this generosity is well-tempered by a real sense of balance and craft. Oh so satisfying, the Rocca Barbera d'Alba is a delicious red to drink now or cellar a little while.

Its Origins

Bruno Rocca’s parents bought the estate's current property in the 1950‘s when they moved to Rabaja from Barbaresco. Bruno took over the estate when his father died in 1978. As a consummate modernist, Bruno uses modern technology to produce wines with tremendous intensity of fruit balanced by the characteristic Piemontese structure and a judicious use of oak. His wines look, smell and taste like real Nebbiolo and unlike an increasing number of other Piemonte producers, he never feels the need to add a certain extra something to deepen the colour or round out the palate. Bruno started bottling in 1978 and since then has risen to the top of the quality tree in this area, producing a Barbaresco and the single vineyard Rabaja Barbaresco. His daughter, Luisa now works with him at the estate as the marketing manager.

What The Critics Say

92/100 Parker's Wine Advocate, Monica Larner (2018 vintage)

"This is a cozy and genuine wine made with fruit from old vines. The Bruno Rocca 2018 Barbera d'Alba opens to a velvety and richly saturated appearance. The aromas are focused for the most part on dark fruit, blackberry, sweet cherry and spice. This elegantly concentrated Barbera delivers a powerful 15% alcoholic content, and the winemaking process gives it 12 months to age in French oak. The wine finishes on a slightly sweet note with more cherry or blackberry preserves."

91/100 Vinous, Antonio Galloni (2021 vintage)

"Bruno Rocca's 2020 Barbera d'Alba offers terrific brightness to play off its red fleshed fruit. This mid-weight, energetic Barbera delivers the goods and then some. I love the energy here. Red/purplish berries, mint, spice and blood orange lend freshness. In the last few years, Francesco Rocca has started harvesting Barbera before Dolcetto, which is quite unusual, in order to preserve freshness. That approach certainly worked well here."
