Its Origins
"One of my favorite value wineries, Bodegas Borsao was founded in 1958 and Jorge Ordoñez has been bringing these wines into America since he started his company, Fine Estates From Spain, in 1987. He literally put the Campo de Borja appellation on the map, and has done much to encourage consumer attraction to the Grenache grape that is grown in abundance. This winery owns 3,700+ acres of vines, one-third planted with Grenache and the rest Tempranillo, Viura, Cabernet Sauvignon and Mazuelo. All the vineyards are planted at relatively high elevations above 1,300 feet. The soils tend to be poor in organic material, but high in chalk/limestone intermixed with sand, iron and gravel. The hallmark of the Borsao wines are their unmanipulated, fresh, lively fruit character." Parkers Wine Advocate.
What The Critics Say
90/100 Vinous, Josh Raynolds (2019 vintage)
"Brilliant magenta. Smoke-tinged dark berries, cracked pepper and a hint of gaminess on the pungent nose. Chewy and tightly focused on the palate, offering bitter cherry and boysenberry flavors that unfurl and become sweeter on the back half. Lingers with very good persistence on the finish, which features silky tannins and a strong echo of sweet blue fruit. This wine is ridiculously easy to drink and delivers really great value."
