2022 Three Dark Horses McLaren Vale Shiraz

93 Points James Halliday
In stock
A great deal on this McLaren Vale Shiraz which two vintages ago was a staggering #5 and "Best Buy" in the Cuisine tasting (alongside Shiraz with an average price of $105!). This vintage has been rated a wine of exceptional value for money by Halliday. Despite the low price, it is made in small volumes by the ex-Coriole winemaker Matt Broomhead, who returned home from Italy and France to start this label with his dad Alan and his grandad Frank. Delicious fruit from vines aged 20-50 years is basket pressed and aged 12 months in French and American oak, making this a big, bold and inky old-school Shiraz. Halliday rates this winery 5 Stars and says “‘I’m very confident that Matt Broomhead’s venture is destined for greater things in the coming years, as its newly acquired vineyard and onsite winery come on-stream.” A steal at this low price!

Its Origins

"Three Dark Horses is the new project for former Coriole winemaker Matt Broomhead. After vintages in southern Italy (2007) and the Rhone Valley he returned to McLaren Vale in late 2009 and, with his father Alan, buys quality grapes, thanks to the long experience they both have in the region. The third dark horse is Matt's grandfather, a vintage regular. But things are changing. In Nov '17 the business acquired a 5ha vineyard in McLaren Vale, and will build an onsite winery. They are expanding the plantings with grenache blanc, clairette and touriga nacional, and reworking some of the shiraz vines planted in 1964. Part of the vineyard is sand soil-based interspersed with ironstone, a highly desirable mix for shiraz and cabernet sauvignon." -- James Halliday

What The Critics Say

93/100 James Halliday

"Shiraz from Blewitt Springs. It's low in obvious oak influence but chock-full of fruit flavour. This is dark and grunty with blackberry and roasted plum flavours diving into licorice, earth and peppercorn. It means business, in a good way, though it remains fragrant and fresh."

5 Stars and #5 Shiraz in Cuisine Magazine (2020 vintage)

"Although Three Dark Horses is a relatively new producer (started in 2009), the fruit for this is from an established site – Bruno Romano’s vineyard in Seaview, McLaren Vale. This was the original source of fruit that launched Three Dark Horses, the name referring to the three generations of men in the family who run this winery. The maritime influence comes through with subtle saltiness to temper the rich, spicy red fruit. Bright, fresh and easy-drinking, this weighty, mouth-filling shiraz punches above its weight for the price and will sit comfortably at either the dinner table or on the couch in front of Netflix."
