Squawking Magpie SQM Brut Methode NV
Grape
Both Chardonnay and Pinot Noir in this release
Its Origins
Squawking Magpie Owner and Director Gavin Yortt planted the main Woodland’s vineyard in 1995, with further holdings in 2002 extending the focus on Hawkes Bay classic grapes such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Syrah. They are members of Sustainable Winegrowing New Zealand and maintain a strong focus on cellaring wines and a quality-driven (rather than brand-driven) market strategy, which begins with rigorous vineyard management. Though not shouting from every shelf, on quality-for-value Squawking Magpie wines are often among the best Hawkes Bay has to offer.
What The Critics Say
4 Stars and Recommended, Cuisine Magazine
"A Hawke’s Bay sparkling chardonnay of generous character, just right with seafood canapes. The nose of stonefruits, wax and brioche is immediately inviting, and its tastes intense and clean with a balanced, firm finish. “Simply delicious” was Andrew Parkinson’s verdict."
94/100 Cameron Douglas
"Complex bouquet with an intense autolysis of brioche and oat, strawberry, peach and ripe citrus. Equally complex on the palate with bakery goods, some mineral - chalk, white strawberry, stone fruits and very leesy. Fine bold mousse, lengthy finish and nicely complex. Best drinking from today and through 2026+"
