Its Origins

Founded in 1986, Martin Codax is a specialist in estate grown Albarino. Located to the north of Rias Biaxas in Galicia, it is unlike any other wine growing region in Spain. It is greener and cooler, the vineyards are situated along the Atlantic coast, exposed to the salt from the sea. In this climate the native Albarino variety thrives, thicker skinned with higher levels of sugar and acidity, these white wines are both lively and refreshing, just like the landscape around them. The success of Albarino in this region dates as far back to Roman times, who were the first to recognise the potential of Galicia for winemaking. The name Martin Codax comes from a Galician poet during the Middle Ages who sang about love, the land and the coast. The grapes are sourced from over 300 family vineyards, so it is very much a “winery by the people for the people”. There is a certain amount of hometown pride here, this is their unique variety with its own tradition entirely different to the rest of Spain. The people of Martin Codax have a right to be proud, drinking a glass of their Albarino takes you to the coast of the Atlantic, and is a perfect introduction to life in Galicia.

What The Critics Say

Winemaker notes on current 2022 vintage

"Vivid straw-yellow green colour with a touch of ripe lemon. Bright and slightly sparkling. Intense and elegant aroma with hints of fresh herbs, green apples, citric fruits and grapefruit. It is persistent, rounded and full-bodied, with a light petillance that gives the wine an impressive and vivacious sense of freshness."

RobertParker.com, Luis Gutierrez (2019 vintage)

“One of the most reliable and regular wines from the zone, the 2019 Martín Códax, is also affordable and widely available, the first contact of many consumers with Albariño and Rías Baixas. It's always clean, expressive and approachable, with clean aromas of white flowers and fruit and recently cut grass, and it has a soft palate, balanced, with moderate alcohol, good acidity and a touch of sugar that makes it quite mellow but not sweet. One of the best, if not the best, commercial Albariño that doesn't change much from vintage to vintage. 1.5 million bottles produced.”

Decanter (2019 vintage)

"Creamy and rich plump Albariño, balanced by a tang of citrus freshness. Long finish."
