2022 St Clair Pioneer Block 10 Twin Hills Chardonnay

93 Points Richard Caro
In stock
A huge discount for a complete and serious Chardonnay from Saint Clair. This scored an impressive Gold Medal and 95 points from the International Wine Challenge and also 93/100 from Bob Campbell. Ripe fruit from the warm, clay-rich soils of the Omaka vineyard is fermented in French barriques to deliver this label's toasty richness. But this is also a very complete wine with classy maritime and mineral details. A seriously good wine at this major discount, the Twin hills Chardy is one to try!

Its Origins

Saint Clair Family Estate is owned by Neal and Judy Ibbotson, viticulture pioneers in Marlborough since 1978. Grapes were originally supplied to local wine companies; however a desire to extend the quality achieved in the vineyard through to the finished wine led to the establishment of Saint Clair Family Estate in 1994. The Saint Clair name originates from the vineyard property, first settled by the Sinclair family. Pioneer James Sinclair built one of the first homes in Blenheim and was closely associated with the early development of the town. Over time the name of the property reverted to the original Saint Clair. Saint Clair has developed six vineyards in different sites in Marlborough, including the Rapaura, Awatere, Waihopai and Omaka Valleys. Only superior fruit from the best locations for each individual variety is selected for the Saint Clair label.

What The Critics Say

95/100 and Gold Medal at the International Wine Challenge (2021 vintage)

"Tropical fruit and vanilla on the nose with an expressive savoury texture and a long finish. This is an elegant and well structured wine but with beautiful balance."

5 Stars Michael Cooper (2021 vintage)

"The very ageworthy 2021 vintage was grown 'predominantly' in the company's Omaka Valley vineyard, in the Southern Valleys, partly hand-picked, and fermented and lees-aged for nine months in French oak casks (33 per cent new). Bright, light lemon/green, it is full-bodied and vibrantly fruity, with concentrated peach and grapefruit flavours, gently seasoned with biscuity oak, finely balanced acidity, and a long, savoury finish. Full of youthful vigour, it should be at its best 2025+."

93/100 Bob Campbell MW (2021 vintage)

"Rich, weighty, silken-textured chardonnay with white peach, oyster shell, hazelnut and spicy oak flavours. Vibrant, tangy, high-energy wine with an ethereal texture. Good drinking now but should mellow with bottle age. 09 FEB 2023."
