2021 Langmeil Jackaman's Cabernet Sauvignon

94 Points James Halliday

A full-bodied classic of Barossa Cabernet. The Jackaman vineyard was passed to Langmeil by the original owner Arthur Jackaman, who had planted it in the 1960s when Cabernet was newly becoming a "serious" prospect for dry red wine in the Barossa. With old vines that deliver ripeness with finesse, the Jackaman's is a bound to satisfy now or after further years in cellar.

Its Origins

Once a trading village established in 1842, this remarkable place is a captivating pocket of Australia’s wine and vine history that is a must when visiting the Barossa. Owned by the Lindner family, whose own mark on the Barossa spans six-generations of farming, food, community and wine, Langmeil is renowned for its preservation of old vines and the making of distinguished wines from these cherished sites. At the pinnacle of its winemaking is The Freedom 1843 Shiraz, made from what is understood to be the world’s oldest surviving shiraz vineyard believed planted in 1843 at the heart of this historical patch of Barossa earth.

What The Critics Say

94/100 Halliday's Wine Companion, Dave Brookes

"Deep crimson in the glass with aromas of plush blackberry, dark plum and blackcurrant fruits along with hints of fine spice, cedar, licorice, tobacco leaf, dried herbs, violets, clove and vanillin oak. There is an impressive fruit density and flow to this release from the strong 2021 vintage. Fresh too, with a seam of acidity driving the pure fruit along, tannins chalky, fine and granitic, the wine retreating slowly with lovely ripe black fruits and spice." Drink 2023 - 2035

92/100 Huon Hooke

"Very deep red with a good tint of purple and a concentrated and quite oak-influenced bouquet. Earthy/spicy/nutty aromas are evident, reflecting liberal oaking. The tannins are bold and full, adding grip and robustness to the full-bodied flavour. It's not really varietal. A gutsy wine with the structure to age long-term. 20 Dec 2023." Drink 2025 - 2038

92/100 RobertParker.com, Erin Larkin

"The 2021 Jackaman's Cabernet Sauvignon is silkier and more polished than the Blacksmith Cabernet tasted alongside it, and this here leads with blackberry and raspberry jam, resinous oak, dried herbs, tobacco and dark chocolate. The wine is intense and gritty, dark and full-bodied. This is a big wine, but it does achieve balance within the infinite folds of flavor. It's very good, and as a red wine, it's very good indeed, but the density and breadth of the wine does steer it away from a more "classical" Cabernet experience. 14.8% alcohol, sealed under screw cap." Drink 2024 - 2036
