2018 Spinifex Rostein Shiraz

98 Points James Suckling

A new label for us that represents a top selection of Spinifex's Shiraz fruit. Spinifex bought the Rostein vineyard in 2014 and after many years of hard work, they are only now harvesting fruit of the highest standard they consider worthy of this single estate release. Packed with depth and potential, the lush-fruited Rostein is a gorgeous red for the table or medium-term cellar.

Its Origins

Spinifex is a trailblazing winery at the forefront of "The New Barossa" movement. Founded in 2001 by Kiwi Peter Schell and his wife Magali Gely, they are modern-day trailblazers; making elegant, unique wines of ultra-premium quality that are also un-formulaic and genuinely hand-crafted. Peter and Magali met in New Zealand in the 90s, and have had a home in the Barossa Valley for over twenty years now, with a strong commitment and passion for the region. They also have a strong French connection, both physically and philosophically. Magali's family, were vignerons for ten generations near Montpellier in southern France. Peter is a trained oenologist and brings a wealth of experience having made wines in Burgundy, Switzerland, Provence, Bordeaux and Minervois in the Languedoc. Perhaps this explains the strong European feel of their wines. The grapes are sourced from a group of dedicated family growers in both the Barossa and Eden Valleys. The great diversity of the soils and meso-climates of the Barossa, create wines with balance, character, and depth of flavour. The vineyards Peter uses both in the region range from 50 - 120 years old. Schell finds that these old vines – which have tolerated the rigours of drought and heat – produce fruit of exceptional depth, with the indefinable savoury flavours that set Spinifex apart from the stereotypical Barossa style.

What The Critics Say

98/100 James Suckling

"This has an assertive, red-cherry and blackberry nose with crushed stones, graphite and abundant fragrant spices, buried deep in black fruit. The palate has dense tannins and very intense, concentrated, blackberry and blood-plum flavors. Chiseled, compressed, velvety and powerful. Needs three to four years. Screw cap."

96/100 Halliday's Wine companion, Tyson Stelzer

First release. Hand picked, no whole bunches. Wild-yeast fermented then matured for 12 months in 50% new barriques and demi-muids. A grand newcomer for Spinifex, this is the first time this vineyard has stepped up since it was purchased in 2014. Signature Eden Valley shiraz of full purple hue, reverberating with deep-set spice, powerful blackberry and satsuma plum fruit, fresh licorice and a full serve of dark chocolate oak. Impressive concentration is consummately backed with a fine yet taut frame of intricately suspended tannins that carry the finish very long indeed." Drink by 2032

95/100 Parker's Wine Advocate, Erin Larkin

"The 2018 Rostein Vineyard Syrah is in the Flaxman Valley up in Eden Valley, at 500 meters in elevation, planted in the 1940s and 1950s. Incredible label. In the glass, this is all about exotic, sticky lamb fat wrapped around a spicy, pure core of fruit. This is classic Eden Valley Syrah here—fatty, meaty, fine, pure, attractive and laced with Earl Grey tea." Drink 2022 - 2037
