2021 Spinifex Barossa Syrah

94 Points James Halliday

A high-scoring Syrah from a boutique legend of the Barossa. This red is called a Syrah (rather than Shiraz) because the concept here is a more European or Kiwi-styled expression of the grape. It's a relatively higher-toned and more floral expression of Barossa — a yin to the Bête Noir's yang, you could say. While still generous and lush, this Syrah's more medium-bodied harmonies are focussed on redder fruits and exotic spice. Vine ages vary from 25 to 100 years. A lovely reference point for Spinifex's deep European influence, the Syrah is delicious for the price.

Its Origins

Spinifex is a trailblazing winery at the forefront of "The New Barossa" movement. Founded in 2001 by Kiwi Peter Schell and his wife Magali Gely, they are modern-day trailblazers; making elegant, unique wines of ultra-premium quality that are also un-formulaic and genuinely hand-crafted. Peter and Magali met in New Zealand in the 90s, and have had a home in the Barossa Valley for over twenty years now, with a strong commitment and passion for the region. They also have a strong French connection, both physically and philosophically. Magali's family, were vignerons for ten generations near Montpellier in southern France. Peter is a trained oenologist and brings a wealth of experience having made wines in Burgundy, Switzerland, Provence, Bordeaux and Minervois in the Languedoc. Perhaps this explains the strong European feel of their wines. The grapes are sourced from a group of dedicated family growers in both the Barossa and Eden Valleys. The great diversity of the soils and meso-climates of the Barossa, create wines with balance, character, and depth of flavour. The vineyards Peter uses both in the region range from 50 - 120 years old. Schell finds that these old vines – which have tolerated the rigours of drought and heat – produce fruit of exceptional depth, with the indefinable savoury flavours that set Spinifex apart from the stereotypical Barossa style.

What The Critics Say

94/100 Halliday's Wine Companion, Dave Brookes

"Syrah from a selection of vineyards in the Barossa and Eden Valleys, judicious use of whole clusters, matured on light lees in a combination of large-format vessels for around 8 months prior to bottling. Deep purple red in the glass, it's a rollicking, crunchy, bright and sapid ride with a gorgeous plume of plummy fruit, cut with spice and floral nuance, whole-bunch amaro notes and a sense of space, clarity and detail that brings a smile to the face. Such a wonderful drink and great value." Drink 2022 - 2029

93/100 Parker's Wine Advocate, Erin Larkin

"The 2021 Syrah is gently meaty on the nose, but very fresh, though. Forty percent of the fruit underwent carbonic maceration, which has imbued the wine with life, energy and a bit of a party. There's a pleasurable fatty sweetness here; it extends the wine out in the mouth and through the finish. It's very good. This is vibrant and bright, but it's slinky too. Gee, it's good. The tannins that shape the wine make it savory, but the core of fruit is pure." Drink 2022 - 2032

92/100 JamesSuckling.com, Ned Goodwin MW

"A Barossan riff on Crozes-Hermitge, so laden with clove, iodine and salumi is it. Bursting with the most perfect blueberries at the seams. Mid-weighted of feel, intensely aromatic and absolutely delicious, this slakes the thirst. The reductive pedal, impeccably held adrift in the name of effusive drinkability. Lovely gear. Drink or hold."
