2023 Barraud Macon Vergisson La Roche

93 Points John Caro
In stock
A extremely fine Chardonnay from a very special spot in Burgundy's Macon region. High on the craggy limestone outcrop of Vergisson, “La Roche” is the highest altitude vineyard in the entire appellation (which means grapes can ripen slowly in the cooler climate). This vineyard has only 12 inches of dirt before you hit solid rock, and is known for its top-rated and expensive Pouilly Fuisse. But here the 40+ year old vines that supply this label are given the humble "Macon" name, because they are higher up the hill, and the slope curves a touch little further round to the north. The delicious result is a slow-ripened wine of remarkable elegance and depth, in which bright lemon citrus flavours retain a sense of minerality and poise far above the wine's modest price point.

Its Origins

La Roche de Vergisson is hard to miss when driving south from the Côte d’Or to the hamlet of Vergisson. The massive rock looms over the small town like a massive ship’s prow. On almost all sides are some of the finest Chardonnay vines in France – in Vergisson that means exclusively Pouilly-Fuissé (Mâcon-Vergisson ‘La Roche’ being the only exception.) This is the epicenter for intense, mineral driven French Chardonnay. -- Lying in the shadow of this grand rock is one of the finest estates in all of Burgundy and unquestionably the master of Vergisson, Domaine Daniel et Julien Barraud. With holdings in the best and oldest vineyards in the region, the wines are a PhD level course in world-class Chardonnay. -- The viticultural history of the Barraud family began in 1905, when Jean-Marie Barraud first purchased parcels in Vergisson, the highest point in the Mâconnais. Since that time, Daniel Barraud, along with his son Julien and wife Martine (the master of the vines), have turned his family’s domaine into the benchmark producer of the region and a must-have for all Burgundy lovers. The heights reached by this storied producer mandate that they must now be compared to the best of the Côtes d’Or. This is simply white Burgundy at its finest – and most reasonably priced. -- Skurnik Wines

What The Critics Say

93/100 Decanter, Charles Curtis MW (2020 vintage)

"Domaine Barraud has produced here a lovely, lemony 2020 that is not lacking richness while maintaining a thrilling freshness. The lieu-dit Sur la Roche stretches around the Roche de Vergisson, covering three levels of appellation: Pouilly-Fuissé premier cru on the lower, southeast facing slopes, village-level Pouilly-Fuissé above this, and regional Mâcon-Vergisson as the hill wraps around to face northeast. However, it is precisely here that one will find the most chiseled, mineral expressions of Chardonnay in a hot year."
