2021 Schoffit Grand Cru Rangen Gewurztraminer

"The perfection of Gewurztraminer" was the phrase used in Parker's Wine Advocate for this incredible Grand Cru. Lovingly made by the insanely hard-working Domaine Schoffit, it is wonderfully lush and concentrated but also retains a sense of both savouriness and mineral tension. The result is a hugely satisfying but with ethereal dimensions that are unique in Gewurz. Schoffit literally works too hard in the vineyard to think about the market, so we are lucky to import this. A total gem and the best value Grand Cru wine in all of France.

Its Origins

Bernard Schoffit is a brilliant pioneer in Alsace’s greatest Grand Cru, Rangen de Thann. The Domaine, started by Bernard’s father Robert at 10 hectares, is situated near Colmar. 25 years ago, Bernard, then still very young, embarked on an ambitious program of buying land in Rangen, around the Clos St. Theobold. Totaling nearly 6.5 hectares, a good part of it had been abandoned because it was too steep to work. Through sheer determination and ambition, he has now reclaimed all 6.5 hectares. From these incredibly steep slopes, with incredibly low yields, he is making simply extraordinary wine from each plot he grows. Bernard’s gift for wine-making is not reserved only for his Rangen wines. Now joined by his son Alexandre in managing the Domaine, in their vineyards near Colmar they practice the same rigorous approach to yields. These yields, very old vines, and Bernard and Alexandre's guiding hands produce wines that are all marked by the following characteristics: intensity, very pure varietal character, great concentration of fruit and richness on the palate, and perfect acidity to balance and carry this weight into a long and brilliant finish. All Organic.

What The Critics Say

95/100 Decanter, Panos Kakaviatos

"Super-dry extract and an enveloping palate, with bergamot, wet stone, rose petal and crushed mint aromas and flavours. I love the textural finesse, mid-palate sap and impressive length." Drink 2023 - 2042

96/100 Vinous, Anne Krebiehl MW (2022 Vintage)

"The 2022 Gewurztraminer Rangen Clos Saint Theobald Grand Cru is from parcels in the lower and mid reaches of the Rangen. It comes with lovely honeysuckle, tangerine peel and an overtone of rose. The palate is rounded and robust, channeling rose oil on a stony palate. It opens into the fresh, crushed flesh of ripe yellow peach, edged with vivid zestiness, blood orange peel and an exquisite, lovely, mouthwatering, pithy bitterness. This is what makes the wine, what gives it structure and depth. This is intense but toned, gorgeous, prolonged, and off-dry with 23 g/L of residual sweetness. (Off-Dry). Drink 2028-2048"

97/100 RobertParker.com, Ian D'Agata (2015 vintage)

"Schoffit's citrus colored 2015 Gewurztraminer Grand Cru Rangen Clos Saint-Théobald opens with a noble perfume: bright, fragrant, complex and finessed, with a fascinating mix of floral, herbal, stony and fruity aromas that are all perfectly interwoven—nothing sticking out. This is sublime harmony and fine complexity! Full-bodied, round and piquant, with great elegance, finesse and vitality, this is a concentrated andwell-structured, yet beautifully balanced and persistent Rangen Gewurztraminer. It is full of tension and finishes with the greatest finesse and ethereal elegance I have probably ever experienced with this gorgeous grape variety. This 2015 Rangen might be the perfection of Gewurztraminer, and if not, it is at least a legendary wine that is sweet (59 grams per liter), but thanks to its vivacious acidity and perfect ripeness, in ambrosial balance. Or, with less adjectives and attributes: Buy as much of it as you can get! For the price you can't hardly get a better wine anywhere on planet earth! If you knew where the grapes for this wine are cultivated and how much time it takes to tend the vines and harvest the grapes (not to mention the unique terroir itself or Zind-Humbrecht's twin from the Clos Saint-Urbain), you would know this wine should cost triple the price!"
