Its Origins

Bernard Schoffit is a brilliant pioneer in Alsace’s greatest Grand Cru, Rangen de Thann. The Domaine, started by Bernard’s father Robert at 10 hectares, is situated near Colmar. 25 years ago, Bernard, then still very young, embarked on an ambitious program of buying land in Rangen, around the Clos St. Theobold. Totaling nearly 6.5 hectares, a good part of it had been abandoned because it was too steep to work. Through sheer determination and ambition, he has now reclaimed all 6.5 hectares. From these incredibly steep slopes, with incredibly low yields, he is making simply extraordinary wine from each plot he grows. Bernard’s gift for wine-making is not reserved only for his Rangen wines. Now joined by his son Alexandre in managing the Domaine, in their vineyards near Colmar they practice the same rigorous approach to yields. These yields, very old vines, and Bernard and Alexandre's guiding hands produce wines that are all marked by the following characteristics: intensity, very pure varietal character, great concentration of fruit and richness on the palate, and perfect acidity to balance and carry this weight into a long and brilliant finish. All Organic.

What The Critics Say

92/100 John Gillman View from the Cellar

"The 2022 Chasselas “Vieilles Vignes” from Domaine Schoffit is a beautiful bottle of wine. The old vines were planted all the way back in 1940 and are now more than eighty years of age. The wine’s bouquet is bright and precise, wafting from the glass in a mix of peach, apple, an exotic touch of papaya, a lovely base of soil tones, acacia blossoms and lavender. On the palate the wine is full-bodied, focused, crisp and succulent at the core, with fine balance and a long, vibrant and impressively complex finish. The wine comes in at 12.5 percent octane in this vintage, but seems fermented to complete dryness to my palate. Fine juice that will improve with a bit of time in the cellar."

90/100 Vinous, Anne Krebiehl MW

"The 2022 Chasselas Vieilles Vignes is from vines planted on gravel, sand and rocky soils in Colmar, planted in 1939 and between 1942 and 1954. These are co-plantations of both white and pink Chasselas. The nose is subtle, showing a touch of cold stearin, yeast and waxed citrus peel. The palate is light but textured. Pale Reine Claude flesh adds gentle fruit, but the texture and the yeast shine on the light but fluid body, finishing with just a little pithy bitterness. It is very pure and slender with a mild but bone-dry finish. (Bone-Dry)." Drink 2024 - 2034
