Alsace is the home of Pinot Gris, and this poised yet weighty style shows why. Schoffit's classic Gris is close to dry but packed with flavour, with juicy tree fruits along with florals and minerals that add interest with food. All the richness with only a touch of the sweetness, this is a great option for Europhiles or Kiwi Gris fans who want a little bit more for their money. Try this!

Its Origins

Bernard Schoffit is a brilliant pioneer in Alsace’s greatest Grand Cru, Rangen de Thann. The Domaine, started by Bernard’s father Robert at 10 hectares, is situated near Colmar. 25 years ago, Bernard, then still very young, embarked on an ambitious program of buying land in Rangen, around the Clos St. Theobold. Totaling nearly 6.5 hectares, a good part of it had been abandoned because it was too steep to work. Through sheer determination and ambition, he has now reclaimed all 6.5 hectares. From these incredibly steep slopes, with incredibly low yields, he is making simply extraordinary wine from each plot he grows. Bernard’s gift for wine-making is not reserved only for his Rangen wines. Now joined by his son Alexandre in managing the Domaine, in their vineyards near Colmar they practice the same rigorous approach to yields. These yields, very old vines, and Bernard and Alexandre's guiding hands produce wines that are all marked by the following characteristics: intensity, very pure varietal character, great concentration of fruit and richness on the palate, and perfect acidity to balance and carry this weight into a long and brilliant finish. All Organic.

What The Critics Say

90/100 Vinous, Anne Krebiehl MW

"The 2022 Pinot Gris Lieu-Dit Harth is from the Oberharth, closer to Colmar. The vines are between 50 and 60 years old. The palate comes with gentle bitterness surrounding the juicy, supple pear fruit, with russet pear peel gently framing this rounded wine. The finish is balanced with 3 g/L of residual sweetness but tempered by that pear peel notion. (Bone-Dry)." Drink 2024 - 2034

93/100 James Suckling (2019 vintage)

"An excellent, new-style dry pinot gris. Such a delightful nose of ripe melon with hints of snow peas and summer flowers. Generous, round and silky, with impressive depth for an entry-level wine. Everything fits so beautifully on the properly dry palate. Long, complex finish with a positive hint of bitterness that accentuates the final impression of crispness. From organically grown grapes. Drink or hold."
