2023 Hiedler Gruner Veltliner 1OTW Schenkenbichl

Grape
Grüner Veltliner
Its Origins
From 35 hectares of Erste Lage (Premier Cru) holdings in the Kamptal, the Hiedler family has been producing wine in Langelois since the mid-18th century. Starting in 1980, Ludwig and María Angeles Hiedler have led operations, while their son Ludwig Jr. finishes his winemaking studies and practicum at Von Volxem. Hiedler’s holdings are in the best vineyards in the Kamptal, with Riesling parcels in the Heiligenstein and Gaisberg, and Grüner Veltliner in the deep loess vineyards that rest at the base of those mountains: Lamm, Grub, and Renner. Hiedler’s other sites in the area include a ‘Grand Cru’ monopole, Thal, Spiegel, Steinhaus, and Loiserberg. In addition to Grüner Veltliner and Riesling, the Hiedlers work with Weissburgunder (Pinot Blanc), the first plantings of which were planted by Ludwig’s father in the Schenkenbickl, a ‘Grand Cru’ plot just below the Käferberg. All organic/natural practices. Notably, malolactic fermentation is never blocked but allowed to occur naturally, allowing Hiedler a quite broad and unique dimension of texture and weight; a distinctive approach to both Grüner Veltliner and Riesling from this region.
What The Critics Say
93-95/100 Falstaff Magazine, Peter Moser
"Pale yellow, green hints, silver reflections. On the nose, delicate floral nuances, pome fruit, a hint of pear and a touch of orange. Medium complexity with fine fruit expression, mineral-salty notes, a subtle acidic structure and a touch of blossom honey on the persistent finish. Good length and definite ageing potential."
94/100 JamesSuckling.com, Stuart Pigott
"A very aromatic gruner veltliner with notes of acacia blossoms, chamomile and fresh lemons. Juicy and focused, with excellent mineral energy on the bright, medium-bodied palate. Stacks of wet stone character in the long, linear finish. Drink or hold."
16.5/20 JancisRobinson.com, Julia Harding MW
"Exposed south-facing site in Langenlois. Crystalline rocks. Certified Sustainable Austria. Ripe pear and soaring citrus, plus a hint of white pepper. Pure, juicy and deliciously dry, not rich but finely balanced between acid and fruit purity, with a long, direct, lightly creamy finish. An elegant wine. (JH)" Drink 2025 - 2033
