2024 Mt Difficulty Bannockburn Pinot Gris
Grape
Pinot Gris
Its Origins
It all began in the early 1990's, when the owners of five newly-planted vineyards in Bannockburn shook hands and decided to work together to produce wine under one label, Mt Difficulty. As a result, Mt Difficulty now owns some of the oldest vineyards in the Bannockburn sub-region of Central Otago in New Zealand's rugged South Island. The Mt Difficulty brand started in 1998 with a very small production of Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, made by Grant Taylor of Gibbston Valley Wines (now of Valli Wines). Prior to this the gang sold their grapes to either Gibbston Valley or Chard Farm. The Air New Zealand wine awards in 1999 put Mt Difficulty on the map, with the 1998 Pinot Noir winning a gold medal and the Chardonnay, silver.
What The Critics Say
Winemaker notes on current 2024 vintage
"Mt Difficulty Bannockburn Pinot Gris 2024 displays pear and ginger on the front palate, joined by jasmine and honeysuckle florals. A lovely textural style of Pinot Gris, fully ripe and showing the fresh acidity of Central Otago to carry the full-bodied palate. A long silky finish with pear, red delicious apple and clover honey to the end."
91/100 RobertParker.com, Erin Larkin (2023 vintage)
"The 2023 Bannockburn Pinot Gris spends six months sulfured on lees prior to bottling, and this contributes to the texture in the mouth. In the mouth, the wine has a nice, plump weight and spread, but the fruit remains pert and energetic, with nashi pear, green apple, lemon pith and lanolin. There are some crushed nuts to close. Nicely done."
91/100 Bob Campbell MW (2022 vintage)
"Ripe, almost luscious pinot gris with pineapple, pear, guava, vanilla and fragrant honeysuckle flavours. Attractive wine in a deliciously accessible style. Very good value at this price."
