A super deal price on this classy Gisborne reserve Chardonnay that's rich and finely made. For years Rebecca Salmond's 'Iliad' has been an institution in New Zealand Chardonnay, with well measured ripeness and creaminess making it a classic go-to for Chardonnay-lovers. Hand selected from the ‘Kawitiri Vineyard’ in the Golden Triangle region of Gisborne. The Mendoza clone is grown on clay soil on an old river bed. Non irrigated and tended by hand these are some of the oldest vines in the region. As Michael Cooper says, "Top vintages represent Gisborne Chardonnay at its finest."

Its Origins

Odyssey Wines is owned by Rebecca Salmond. Rebecca's voyage into winemaking began at Massey University in New Zealand and Adelaide University's Roseworthy College in Australia, where she graduated with a degree in Biotechnology and a Post Graduate Diploma in Winemaking Science. She then travelled and worked in some of the world's finest wine and culinary regions: Burgundy, Bordeaux and Cote Rotie in France; Alto Adige and Sicily in Italy; Marlborough and Hawkes Bay in New Zealand. Rebecca launched her label Odyssey in 1994, with small amounts of premium wines. Odyssey now has 25 acres of land in Marlborough's Brancott Valley under vine. Rebecca's well-honed philosophy sees her making only subtle adjustments to the wine, and using where appropriate the finest oaks. All wines are single vineyard. Odyssey Wines has garnered a number of accolades and awards.

What The Critics Say

95/100 Cameron Douglas MS (2022 vintage)

"Highly polished deep straw tones with golden highlight lead toa bouquet of complexity depth. Aromas of peach and white fleshed nectarine, there’s a creamy vanilla custard suggested, wood smoke and wet clay mineral quality. Youthful and complex with a gentle positive reduction quality. Lovely weight and texture on the palate with a satin-cream touch then flavours of orchard fruits and citrus carried through a medium+ acid line and oak spice highlights. Delicious, lengthy and textured. Best drinking from 2024 through 2029+."

94/100 Wine Orbit, Sam Kim (2022 vintage)

"Rich and generous, the wine shows mango, golden peach, vanillin oak and brioche characters on the nose. The palate delivers excellent weight and creamy texture combined with bright acidity, finishing expansive and delicious. It’s mouthfilling and sophisticated with seductive complexity. At its best: now to 2029. $32.00. www.odysseywines.co.nz. April 2023."
