2023 Pegasus Bay Sauvignon Blanc

A classic Waipara white from longstanding experts in the region, Pegasus Bay. Their Sauvignon-Semillon blend is now labelled Sauvignon Blanc, because it has a smaller portion of barrel aged Semillon in the blend. But the Bordeaux feel is still the same, with bright fruit expression getting a soft and rounded texture from lees aging and some longer maceration on skins. Delicious wine for the price, the Pegasus Sauvignon Blanc is still a classic choice!

Its Origins

Located in arguably New Zealand's most exciting wine region of North Canterbury (more specifically, Waipara), albeit sparsely scattered with wine estates it is at the forefront of interesting and unique wines in NZ. This is due in part to a fabulous free-draining, well protected terroir. Pegasus Bay is run by the Donaldson family who were pioneers in the region and have been involved with local grape growing and winemaking since the 1970's. The whole family are involved in the process from grape to bottle, and a deep respect for the land, with a long term view towards vine and soil health typifies the Donaldson Family's approach to grape growing. Pegasus Bay is an accredited member of the NZWG sustainable viticulture program and are firm believers of using natural methods to combat pests and diseases rather than the application of unnecessary pesticides and herbicides.

What The Critics Say

93/100 Cameron Douglas MS

"An exciting and vibrant bouquet of fresh citrus fruits, a fine savoury quality then layers of peach and pith, an apple crisp quality and layer of stones and gravels. A taut firm palate with a high acid line, the fine savoury idea returns as a definitive texture, flavours mirror the bouquet and there’s a gently warming alcohol. A wine that’s all about bouquet, flavour and mouthfeel simultaneously delivering at volume and intensity. This wine will age well with best drinking from 2025 through 2034+."

95/100 Parkers Wine Advocate Erin Larkin

"I have to admit to loving this wine. It's wild. The 2023 Sauvignon Blanc leads with dried herbs, tobacco, jasmine tea, graphite, that complex drift of dehydrated orange peel—from the skin-contact component—and a host of other characters. A wine that you can sit on and consider is an exciting wine in my book. In the mouth, the wine is textural and dry, layered and complex, with all of the characters mentioned above, a warmth of alcohol and plenty of other attractive things that keep me coming back for more. I wrote, upon my visit to the estate last year, that "Pegasus Bay is responsible for Rieslings worth crossing an ocean for." I'd say the same for this Sauvignon Blanc. This is an excellent wine, among my favorites in all of New Zealand. It's textural as hell, chewy and great."

5 Stars Gavin Hubble, Grape to Glass

"This Sauvignon Blanc has a youthful straw yellow colour with a shining hue. On the upbeat aroma you are greeted with quince, pineapple skin, lemon curd notes and citrus zest. On the sensory engaging palate, you have those vibrant citrus characters, highlighted by a fine minerality weaving through a deft lemon pastry nuance. This expression has defined breadth across the palate, while kept fresh and focused from good varietal acidity leading you to a memorable dismount on the animated finish."
