2016 Felsina Vin Santo del Chianti Classico (375 ml)

96 Points John Caro
In stock
A beautifully complex and nutty Vin Santo from Felsina in Chianti. With a dash of Sangiovese along with the usual white grapes, this is made by straw drying and fermentation in very small oak casks. These vessels already contain what is called the "mother", a complex and thick liquid from fermentation that is carries its complexity over from vintage to vintage. Already long aged, this is one of the finest of its style from this region, and a treasure with rich cheeses or desserts.
$74.99 in mixed 6+ or $83.99 per bottle

Usually Malvasia and Trebbiano with some Sangiovese

Its Origins

The estate vineyards straddle the Chianti Classico and Chianti Colli Senesi region, and are quite close to the town of Siena. There are 61 hectares of vines in all, but the property is much bigger, totalling 475 hectares, and including olive trees, wheat fields and forests. The name Felsina dates back to the Etruscan people, and back to 2000 BC. Many words in Italy beginning with ‘Fel’ or ‘Bol’ have Etruscan roots. The modern era of Fèlsina began in 1966 when current owner Giuseppe Mazzocolin’s father-in-law acquired the property. They began with 9 hectares of vines, but grew this by massale selection to its current size, and acquired a second property: Castello di Farnetella, in the Colli Senesi.

What The Critics Say

97/100 Wine Spectator (2015 vintage)

"An exquisite Vin Santo, with aromas and flavors of brown butter, caramel, molasses, gingerbread and roasted walnut riding the vibrant structure. Impeccably balanced, with fine complexity and a long, resonant aftertaste. Malvasia, Trebbiano and Sangiovese. Drink now through 2040."

96/100 Vinous, Antonio Galloni (2015 vintage)

"The 2015 Vin Santo del Chianti Classico is such a classy wine. Scents of orange peel, hazelnut, dried flowers, chamomile and lightly burnt sugar all grace this exquisite Vin Santo from Fèlsina. It is one of the most refined Vin Santos readers will come across and a true archetype."

94/100 Parker's Wine Advocate, Monica Larner (2015 vintage)

"Pouring forth from a 375-milliliter bottle, the Fèlsina 2015 Vin Santo del Chianti Classico shows a dark amber color with shiny golden highlights. The wine is smooth and creamy in texture but not too viscous. In fact, it falls smoothly over the palate, imparting candied fruit, honey, almond and marron glacé along the way. This sunny vintage gives us a more accessible taste of one Italy's most prestigious dessert wines."
