Its Origins

Domaine de la Janasse was established in 1973 by Aimé Sabon. Brother and sister team of Christophe and Isabelle Sabon continue to work wonders at Janasse, and farm 80 hectares of vineyards spread over a number of wine appellations: Châteauneuf du Pâpe, which is all located in the north-east of the appellation in the commune of Courthézon to be precise, Côtes du Rhône, Côtes du Rhône Village, but also Vin de Pays de la Principauté d'Orange and Vin de table. Concrete tanks are used for the Grenache and oak for the Syrah and Mourvèdre; in other words, everything is fairly traditional; it is the quality of the raw materials which is so impressive and for that reason alone, leaving aside the clear skill and vision of the Sabons, that we are delighted to take on these excellent wines in our listings.

What The Critics Say

90/100 James Suckling

"Plenty of cherries, wild berries, cassis and Mediterranean herbs on the nose. Medium body with velvety tannins. Juicy fruit in the center with a crunchy character at the finish. Drink now on"

91/100 Parker's Wine Advocate, Joe Czerwinski (2017 vintage)

"Bottled just a week before my visit, the 2017 Cotes du Rhone contains just 40% Grenache. There's 20% each Mourvèdre and Syrah, with the balance a mix of Carignan and Cinsault. Raised exclusively in concrete vats and foudres, it's a juicy, mouthwatering mixed bowl of blueberries and cherries that should please most palates. Medium to full-bodied, it features a plump, appealing texture and silky tannins. Despite pumping up the blend with other varieties, the shortage of Grenache this year means that production was down by 20%. It should still be a relative bargain."
