2024 Man O' War Exiled Waiheke Island Pinot Gris

92 Points Richard Caro
In stock
A sleeper legend in Kiwi Gris. Once people try it, they usually go back because it is always so distinctive, with lush stone fruit against fresh acidity along with a unique salty-mineral undertow in the flavours. Sourced partly from one of New Zealand's strangest vineyards — on the tiny island of Ponui, just off the coast of Waiheke — this wine is packed with interest and X factor.

Its Origins

First planted in 1993, at the eastern end of Waiheke Island, Man O’ War consists of 150 acres of vines planted in 76 individual hillside blocks, each with a distinct soil profile and microclimate. Every single block bears the footprints, and sometimes the names, of those who transformed Man O’ War’s rugged hillsides into a spectacular patchwork of vines. Helmed by winemaker Duncan McTavish and vineyard manager Matt Allen, the wines represent a legacy of preservation and great respect for the land and its history.

What The Critics Say

Winemaker notes on previous 2023 vintage

"Exiled 2023 has a lift of spice on the nose with citrus, pear and apple combining to create a complex fruitful aroma. The palate is zesty and fresh with a firm grip of tannin complementing the ‘off dry’ style and the acidity. The wine has a pleasant ‘gin and tonic’ finish giving both persistence and a freshness and delicacy inviting you back for more. Enjoy chilled everywhere, anytime."

93/100 Bob Campbell MW (2019 vintage)

"Powerful wine from grapes grown on two islands with ripe pear, honey, root ginger, musk and grapefruit marmalade flavours. A strong sweet-and-sour influence creates energy and tension giving the wine a dynamic dimension. 05 MAR 2020."

95/100 Wine Orbit, Sam Kim (2017 vintage)

"Powerful and sumptuous, this is reminiscent of a top-notch Alsace pinot gris. Gorgeous aromas of baked pear, mango, honey, warm spice and potpourri lead to a concentrated palate that is plush and delicious. It is wonderfully textured and magnificently fruited, brilliantly enhanced by elegant sweetness and juicy acidity, finishing persistent and creamy. Grapes were grown on their estate vineyards in Waiheke and Ponui Islands. Style: Medium. May 2018."
