A legend in high demand. The Clos Des Papes is one of the greatest and most famous Chateauneuf du Pape produced today. It offers dense complexity and richness, combined with extreme elegance, and a prospect of two-plus decades in cellar. This fine and "not at all overblown" red delivers Rhone richness to the Burgundy palate. Don't dally as this sells out fast.

Its Origins

Clos des Papes is one of the great established names of Châteauneuf-du-Pape and in recent years has produced a succession of remarkable wines made by Paul-Vincent Avril. For the red Chateauneuf, Clos des Papes uses up to 20% of Mourvedre in the blend. Grenache and Syrah are the other main components at around 50% and 10% respectively, with the balance being a mix of all the other permitted varieties. Clos des Papes is one of the few estates to use all permitted varieties for both red and white Chateauneuf. They are well-known for producing one of the most authentic and long-lived examples of the appellation, having started estate bottling in 1896. The white Chateauneuf-du-Pape also ages extremely well providing great drinking pleasure for 20 years or more. It is made from almost equal percentages of all the permitted white varieties. The property has today 32 ha, 3 of which is with white varieties. 24 different parcels are spread around the town, and a parcel is nearby the “Pope’s Castle” and has been surrounded by walls (clos), which is where the name of the domain originates. These wines are very limited and always in high demand.

What The Critics Say

95/100 Decanter, Matt Walls

"Defined raspberry and redcurrant fruits, some woody spices in the background. Quite a rounded, fluid style, the acidity is really quite marked this year. Tannins are gentle, and it finishes on raspberry and redcurrant coulis. There's a silky touch on the palate. It's built around the acidity, the tannins are just gently sandy. Good sense of purity, quite a Burgundian vintage. Less Grenache in the blend this year as it was particularly hit by the frost." Drink 2025 - 2038

95/100 Jeb Dunnuck

"While production was down 40% due to the frost, Vincent was able to make a beautiful 2021 Châteauneuf Du Pape that readers will love to have in the cellar. All about finesse and elegance, it reveals a classic Clos des Papes nose of both red and black fruits as well as tons of floral, pepper, and spicy notes. These carry to a medium-bodied 2021 that has good ripeness (the alcohol is 15%), a supple, silky mouthfeel, ripe tannins, and a great finish. It's not far off the style of the 2020, and while it doesn't have the density of a top vintage, it nevertheless has balance, complexity, and elegance, and will have 15+ years of longevity."

18/20 Jancis Robinson.com, Alistair Cooper MW

“Leather and spice notes, pure with good fresh vivacity on the nose. The palate is ripe and seductive, layered with forest fruits, dark spiced figs. Attractive refreshing acidity, red fruits and a wild garrigue savoury Mourvèdre note – the tannins are supple and silky – dark forest-fruits finish, which is broad, ample and opulent but always with a finesse of tannins and a savoury liquorice mineral note.”
