It is "worth making a lobster bisque" for this pinnacle offering is from the mecca of Rose, Provence's Bandol. The 2015 vintage was the world's No.2 Rose in Decanter Magazine with an unheard of 95/100. Lafran-Veyrolles is a legendary organic producer dating back to 1641, amongst the very best in Southern France. Pale, dry and elegant, this perfect aperitif is also very 'serious' and ageworthy. Based on the Mouvedre grape, this offers the local freshness and poise, with layers of subtle fruit, minerals, and herbal inflections of France's Mediterranean landscape. Superb!

Grape

Mostly Mourvèdre with some Grenache and Cinsault

Its Origins

Located a few kilometers from the Mediterranean, along one of the renowned terroirs of Bandol, the “chemin de L’argile” (clay path), close to the famed Pibarnon estate. Jean-Marie Castel is the vineyard manager and vintner here, with ownership stemming down from the Ferec family for a few generations. The estate farms about 10 hectares, of which 6.5 is Mourvedre, with the rest Grenache, Cinsault, Clairette and Ugni Blanc. They also rent 2 hectares of vines, mostly to be used in the rosé. Vineyard management is almost organic, or “lutte raisonnée”, and the work is all manual (including hand harvesting - a stipulation all over the Bandol AOC). Very traditional.

What The Critics Say

95/100 Decanter Top Panel Tasting 2020 (2015 vintage)

"One of the oldest wine estates in Bandol, 10ha Lafran-Veyrolles dates back to 1641 when it existed as a country house with grounds featuring vineyards, olive groves, hazelnut and oak trees. In fact the word ‘Veyrolles’ derives from the ancient word ‘rouvraie’, referring to an area planted with oak trees in the Cadière-d’Azur commune. The vineyards are situated on clay slopes with limestone and chalky marl subsoils overlooking the sea. This wine is made from 70% Mourvèdre, 15% Grenache and 15% Cinsault, partly using the saignée method of bleeding off a portion of red wine juice after a 24-hour maceration. Elizabeth Gabay MW: Pale copper-pink. Fresh, vibrant redcurrant acidity, long zestiness balanced by a concentrated weight of ripe fruit and good structure. Not overtly phenolic or tannic, but overall a good balance of structure. Joanna Simon: Dried-apple aromas. Slight spritz on the palate. Rounded, sweet-fruited, supple texture, good acidity, still youthful. Rod Smith MW: Mid-pale orange colour. Intensely fruity aromas with some red berries as well as caramelised citrus peel and kumquat. Some savoury saline lees. Still very youthful, and could easily be kept. But delicious and complex. Terrific wine. Worth making a lobster bisque for."

92/100 Parker's Wine Advocate, Joe Czerwinski (2018 vintage)

"Tasted as a tank sample, this 2018 Bandol Rose comes across as edgy and young (as it should). Peach, tangerine and lime zest mark the nose, while the medium-bodied palate should smooth out nicely within a few months yet retain enough freshness to drink well for a couple of years."
