2015 Elephant Hill Hawkes Bay Airavata Syrah (Cellar Release)

98 Points Cameron Douglas MS
In stock
A great library release of a top-line Hawkes Bay Syrah, which is only made in the best years. The most perfectly ripe fruit from the Gimblett and Te Awanga vineyards was hand harvested in five passes, then fermented in small open-top barrels and aged in French oak, including older vessels to keep the dark berry purity. After a good few years to soften in bottle, the Airavata is offering its prime drinking now and for the next few years. Grab this special release!

Its Origins

Reydan and Roger Weiss first fell in love with the beauty of Te Awanga when visiting from Germany in 2001. Together they envisaged owning a state-of-the-art winery, merging the traditional values of wine making with an innovative approach and contemporary style to produce exceptional wines to savour and enjoy. With the majestic elephant as their namesake and nestled against a backdrop of rolling hillsides, Elephant Hill spans over 25 hectares of vineyards producing classical, aromatics whites and world-class reds, helmed by winemaker Steve Skinner.

What The Critics Say

98/100 Cameron Douglas MS

"A complex and engaging wine from bouquet to palate the more your swirl, sip and explore the more it offers. Pressed violets and dark raspberry, black currant and plum. Bold tannins and youthful acidity, a hint of tar and boot polish, meat and smoke. No mistaking the impact of oak with a core of fruit and flavour this wine is impressive. Requires cellar time to integrate and develop. Decant and taste again in 2022. A wine destined to last through to 2030+." Drink 2022 - 2030+

97/100 Sam Kim

"A compelling rendition; the impressively complex bouquet shows blackberry, Black Doris plum, dark spice, cedar and cocoa characters with nuances of floral and game. The palate is superbly concentrated and weighted, delivering waves of delicious flavours and rich texture, brilliantly structured by seamlessly woven tannins. Sumptuous and graceful, destined for a long life. At its best: 2020 to 2032. $120.00. www.elephanthill.co.nz. April 2019." Drink 2020 - 2032

96/100 Bob Campbell MW

"Flagship syrah made from 2/3 Gimblett Gravels and 1/3 Te Awanga grapes. Big, dense and very ripe red that is both elegant and a blockbuster with pepper, plum, berry, coffee and mocha flavours. A concentrated wine that's built to last. 16 APR 2019." Drink 2019 - 2025
