2015 Veuve Clicquot La Grande Dame, label by Paolo Paronetto
Grape
Mainly Pinot Noir with some Chardonnay
Its Origins
Philippe Clicquot-Muiron established Veuve Clicquot in 1772. However, it was Phillipe`s daughter-in-law, Nicole-Barbe Clicquot, who really laid the foundations of the modern company. She was one of the great innovators - it was she who invented remuage in the early 19th century. Now it is part of the LVMH group. The Non-Vintage Brut is a blend of 55% Pinot Noir, 30% Chardonnay and 15% Pinot Meunier. It has a nose of white fruits and freshly baked bread and is fresh and balanced on the palate. The vintage wines are similar in character but with more depth of fruit and more structure. La Grande Dame, first made in 1969, is a rich, smooth and finely textured Champagne that simply oozes class and breeding. Beginning with the Bouzy vineyards that originally belonged to founder Philippe Clicquot, the Veuve vineyards now cover 393 hectares of land, spread over the very best Champagne growing areas: 12 of the 17 Grands Crus, and 18 of the 44 Premiers Crus.
What The Critics Say
99/100 Bettane and Desseauve
"Didier Mariotti offers in his prestige cuvée the vintage 2015 of La Grande Dame in both white and rosé: two absolute monuments even though the rosé version will take a bit more time to fully open up. Rarely has the shift of this cuvée towards a style almost exclusively driven by Pinot Noir been expressed so brilliantly."
95/100 Vinous, Antonio Galloni
"The 2015 La Grande Dame is bright and nicely focused. There’s good energy driving a core of Pinot Noir fruit. Pear, white owers, mint, white pepper and lime are nicely delineated. The 2015 is not the most complex Grande Dame I have ever tasted, but it oers plenty of immediacy with no vegetal notes or hard contours that have proven so challenging elsewhere. This is an expertly made Champagne by any measure. Dosage is 6 grams per liter. Disgorged: October, 2021." Drink 2023 - 2030
95/100 The Wine Front, Curly Haslam-Coates
"The latest release of Veuve Clicquot’s Grande Dame is sourced from 8 Grand Cru vineyards and is a blend of 90% Pinot Noir and 10% Chardonnay. Each release of Veuve Clicquot’s Grande Dame is teamed with an artist and the 2015 collaboration is with objects and sculpture artist Paolo Paronetto. 2015 is a vintage that has benefited Pinot Noir so I expect this won’t be the only Grand Marque we see declaring a vintage of their flagship Champagnes. Smooth and rich with notes of candied peel, ginger and white blossoms, grissini bread sticks combine with crisp nectarine and saline minerality. A fine, long length that will reward those with a good hiding place in their cellar." Drink 2024 - 2044
