Its Origins

Grasshopper Rock is one of the world’s southern most vineyards, established in 2003 and dedicated exclusively to pinot noir. The vineyard is situated on Earnscleugh Road, across the Clutha River from Alexandra. The site enjoys high sunshine hours by day and very cool temperatures by night and is sufficiently harsh and difficult to make the vines work their hardest. With extremes of heat and cold comes the risk of spring and autumn frosts, providing a demanding but rewarding environment for the production of premium pinot noir.

What The Critics Say

94/100 Bob Campbell MW

"Fragrant pinot noir with floral/rose petal and berry flavours that contrasts with a structure of fine, sappy tannins. Although the wine is relatively light-bodied the tannic backbone suggests that it has good cellaring potential 03 Aug 2024." Drink 2024 - 2029

94/100 Decanter, Emma Jenkins MW

"From a single vineyard in Alexandra, one of the world’s most southerly, planted in 2003. Enticing nose, layered and interesting, perfumed with red liquorice, spice, dried herbs and earth. The palate is elegant and firm with fine, silty tannins and a nice herbal (not green) savouriness to offset the core of juicy rich fruit – a hallmark of the sub-region. Supple and harmonious, with a real sense of lightness and grace." Drink 2024 - 2030

92/100 James Suckling

"A tangy and fresh red with a peach, strawberry and citrus character and hints of bitter and cedar notes. It’s medium-bodied with fine tannins and a lively finish. Really crunchy. Drink or hold. Screw cap."
