2024 Pegasus Bay Gewurtztraminer
Grape
Gewurtztraminer
Its Origins
Located in arguably New Zealand's most exciting wine region of North Canterbury (more specifically, Waipara), albeit sparsely scattered with wine estates it is at the forefront of interesting and unique wines in NZ. This is due in part to a fabulous free-draining, well protected terroir. Pegasus Bay is run by the Donaldson family who were pioneers in the region and have been involved with local grape growing and winemaking since the 1970's. The whole family are involved in the process from grape to bottle, and a deep respect for the land, with a long term view towards vine and soil health typifies the Donaldson Family's approach to grape growing. Pegasus Bay is an accredited member of the NZWG sustainable viticulture program and are firm believers of using natural methods to combat pests and diseases rather than the application of unnecessary pesticides and herbicides.
What The Critics Say
Winemaker notes on current 2024 vintage
"It has an alluring light golden hue. The bouquet leaps from the glass, a volley of ginger, cinnamon, lychee and lavender at first, soon opening to reveal more intricate mineral and earthy notes, underlain with a hint of gun smoke. In the mouth it is rich and multi-layered, augmented by unobtrusive sweetness and a simmering phenolic drive, that flows across the palate, leading to a prolonged and spicy close. Due to the varietal intensity of Gewürz, some additional winemaking techniques have been employed to give the wine extra complexity. Skin contact offers increased structure, while oak aging on lees has added mouthfeel."
94/100 Bob Campbell MW (2016 vintage)
"Moderately dry, weighty and complex gewürztraminer with appealing floral, Turkish Delight, tropical fruits, spice and a honeyed botrytis influence. Sweetness is balanced by fine, dry tannins that leave a trace of bitterness on the finish. Impressive wine with development potential."
94/100 Wine Orbit, Sam Kim (2017 vintage)
"It's splendidly fruited and richly expressed on the nose showing golden peach, mango, lychee and orange peel aromas with nuances of Turkish Delight, flint and fragrant spice. The palate offers terrific fruit power and intensity together with velvety mouthfeel and elegant sweetness backed by refreshing acidity, making it irresistibly delicious. At its best: now to 2025. $30.00. www.pegasusbay.com. Jan 2020."
