2024 Pegasus Bay Waipara Riesling

94 Points Richard Caro

This classic wine is perhaps New Zealand most consistent Riesling. It is dry to off-dry in sweetness and offers an array of ripe citrus and stonefruit, with a spine of bright acidity and that North Canterbury mineral nuance. The epitome of deliciousness in Waipara Riesling.

Its Origins

Located in arguably New Zealand's most exciting wine region of North Canterbury (more specifically, Waipara), albeit sparsely scattered with wine estates it is at the forefront of interesting and unique wines in NZ. This is due in part to a fabulous free-draining, well protected terroir. Pegasus Bay is run by the Donaldson family who were pioneers in the region and have been involved with local grape growing and winemaking since the 1970's. The whole family are involved in the process from grape to bottle, and a deep respect for the land, with a long term view towards vine and soil health typifies the Donaldson Family's approach to grape growing. Pegasus Bay is an accredited member of the NZWG sustainable viticulture program and are firm believers of using natural methods to combat pests and diseases rather than the application of unnecessary pesticides and herbicides.

What The Critics Say

Winemaker notes on 2024 vintage

"It has a pale lemon hue. Opulently scented, the nose unfurls in waves of citrus, floral and tropical tones. A surge of mandarin spray, pineapple, honeydew melon, and citrus blossom, ebbs to reveal an undercurrent of green apple, kaffir lime leaf and oriental spice, drifting over a steely mineral floor. The palate is rich yet precise, a textured mouthfeel and charming sweetness balanced by appetising acidity and well-pitched phenolics. This is an elegant and stylised wine, crisp and structural, with a long, resonant finish."

94/100 Cameron Douglas MS (2023 vintage)

"The bouquet is quite closed, yet still variety with a lifted bouquet of white flowers, blossoms, and scents of citrus, and orange blossom. A just off-dry wine touches the palate with a backbone of acidity and core flavours that mirror the bouquet, the volume is tuned up, flavors of citrus and apple, lees and a natural white spice quality before the floral scents and orange peel qualities return. Lengthy, elegant and ready, a wine that will also age well. best drinking from day or purchase through 2035."

94/100 James Suckling (2021 vintage)

"Dried apple and pear with some peach pie. Aromatic and brilliant. Full body. Vivid and medium-sweet on the palate. Steely and clear. Drink now or hold. Screw cap."
