The Wrekin is one of Astrolabe's favourite sites, and benefits from the ideal growing conditions offered by the clay slopes at the southern banks of the Wairau Valley. With immense depth detailed by flinty minerals, this superb Chardonnay is a showcase of winemaker Simon Waghorn's special expertise in the Chardonnay variety. Its Origins

Astrolabe was created in 1996 by winemaker Simon Waghorn, the culmination of a career that began in South Australia in 1982. Winemaking later led Simon and his family from Te Kauwhata to Gisborne, where he specialised in Chardonnay, and eventually to Marlborough where in 1996 he and his wife Jane Forrest-Waghorn joined with old friends Paul Davenport and Sally Lewis to have a go at their own label…and so began Astrolabe. Today they work with a number of growers scattered all over Marlborough, from Awatere valley to the Kekerengu coast to the Wairau Valley, developing a wide portfolio of iconic wines that celebrate the varieties and terroirs of Marlborough.

What The Critics Say

93/100 'Excellent' - Cameron Douglas MS

"Aromas and flavours of citrus and peach, baked apple and tangerine, a vanilla custard creamy quality and core of pure fruit with floral overtones. There’s a mineral quality than emerges as the wine opens up in glass along with a hint of white smoke from the oak. On the palate - a dry wine with a youthful acid line, flavours that mirror the bouquet and a fine oak and leesy quality. Youthful still so needs some cellar time with best drinking from late 2023 through 2030."

94/100 Bob Campbell MW (2019 Vintage)

"From an organic vineyard in the clay-rich Southern Valleys. Rich, textural chardonnay with white peach, vanilla, ginger, citrus and sizzled butter flavours. A tasty, complex wine that should develop well with bottle age."

5 Stars Michael Cooper (2019 Vintage)

“The very harmonious, youthful 2019 vintage was grown in the Wrekin Vineyard, in the Southern Valleys. Hand-harvested and fermented and matured for 10 months in French oak puncheons, it is bright, light lemon/green, with fresh, generous, citrusy, peachy flavours, biscuity notes adding complexity, and a creamy-textured, long finish. Showing obvious potential, it should be at its best 2022+.”
