Spanish Garnacha is a style and category that is changing these days. Modern producers are often making reds that are less rich or full-bodied — and more pretty and red-fruited — which they source from old bush vines that are in cooler and more elevated locations. One of the leaders in both style and method is Ca di Mat, which is a collaboration between two innovative winemakers and local farmers in the rugged high altitude terrain of the Sierra de Gredos, near Madrid. Believe it or not, the style here is so delicate and refined that the wine is almost the colour of a Pinot Noir! A surprise for the traditional Spanish red drinker — and more of a delight for the lighter red and Burgundy-lover — these Ca di Mat reds are cutting edge!
