Tasting: Icons of Germany & Austria - Tues 25th March
Our first tasting of the year is the perfect way to end summer, with some of the most iconic white wines of Europe. We start in Austria, without doubt the home of Gruner Veltliner. At the head of the pack since 1856 is Hiedler, an organic family producer from the Kamptal. We shall be tasting two of their greatest rich and dry Gruner Veltliner's from 1OTW vineyards (The Austrian version of 'Premier Cru' ).
Then we will taste 5 incredible Rieslings from Germany, without doubt the greatest examples of the variety on the planet. These are from three of the most legendary producers, Fritz Haag and Willi Schäfer from the heart of the Mosel valley, and Dönnhoff from the Nahe. This is as good as gets.
The Riesling lineup will run the full spectrum of styles from dry to sweet. The EL & GG trocken (dry) Rieslings are the absolute pinnacle of Vineyard Classifactions, the equivalent of Premier & Grand Cru. These are powerful, weighty and textural whites that will delight even Burgundy drinkers. Then we work out way up through the traditional styles of Kabinett and Spätlese, where it's all about the perfect balance of increasing sweetness to acidity. Finally we finish with an incredibly special and rare Auslese dessert wine from one of the greatest sites in Germany. Don't miss this wonderful evening!
